A friend of mine grew up in Los Angeles and went to Hollywood High School. Among his classmates growing up was Barbara Handler. She is the daughter of the family that founded the Mattel toy company.
My friend told me that one day in 1955 Barbara stands up in class and tells the teacher she has an announcement to make. She proceeds to inform the class which consisted of teenagers that there is new show on TV called the Mickey Mouse Club and that everybody should watch it. The Mattel corporation was a sponsor. My friend claims that there was a lot of eyerolling as Mickey Mouse was considered too young and too corny for their age group. I got the impression that Barbara was not one of the "cool kids".
Barbara is the namesake of the Barbie doll. Her brother was named Ken. It was a few years later when the Barbie doll came out. According to my friend, Barbara was the physical opposite of the slim, fine featured, blonde Barbie.
