I did not disgrace my family in yesterday's Fourth of July 10k (6.2 miles) race which I ram in 1:06:28. That is a 10:42 per mile pace.

I am wearing a navy blue shirt, black shorts, white cap and blue shoes in the video below.

The annual Ashland Fourth of July Run kicks off festivities here including a parade, etc. I founded, organized and managed this race 46 years ago.

The display clock starts when the gun goes off. Each runner carries an electronic chip that is activated when they cross the starting line which is about 20 feet wide. You can imagine the bottleneck at the start. It took me about 15 seconds to cross the starting line after the gun sounded. You are probably thinking about shin splints. That happens when a runner suddenly starts or greatly increases the intensity of their work outs. I was common among us runners in high school track and cross-country. Not sure why. This is me finishing the race. I am a little greyer than you might remember. Islander, my wife and I walk similar distances, though not quite every day like you two. My wife in particular gets a workout from gardening. In a couple of weeks we will be heading east where we will visit family in Martha's Vineyard. We will be taking some short side trips to Providence RI and New Haven CT. Is it possible that it was closer to 20 years ago? My son is 26 now, and I remember him being grade school age then. If he was closer to 16 and in high school he would have wanted to stay home. All of my weight loss happened over the last 15 months after I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which prompted me to reform my eating habits. It's all about carbs. I went from 178 to 153 and have kept it off. That's about what I weighed in college. I've been as heavy as 184.
