(ABC News)Former President Donald Trump's legal team has formally requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland, amid fears from his attorneys that the coming weeks could bring a possible indictment of Trump regarding his alleged efforts to retain materials after leaving office and to obstruct the government's attempts to retrieve them.

The letter, though thin on details, presents arguments that Trump should not be charged in the investigation related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents, sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News.

The letter asks Garland for a meeting at his earliest convenience to discuss what the attorneys describe as the "ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated" by special counsel Jack Smith and says that no president has been "baselessly investigated" in such an "unlawful fashion."

The one-page letter was signed by Trump lawyers John Rowley and James Trusty, and does not outline any specific allegations of wrongdoing by Smith and his team.



Don't count on Garland granting Trump's request for a meeting. Garland made a point of appointing a special counsel, Jack Smith, so he (Smith) could be removed from political, DOJ and AG influences including the appearance of influences.--CA

    If this is true, pb sees this as a good thing. If it's true, TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP must think that the inevitable indictment will hurt him.

    My guess is that the announcement will be panned. A stunningly large number of right-wing media people are already declared for Trump...and the progressive SwampMedia is muting its Trump hate to focus on DeSantis.

    It just doesn't seem like a good idea. It will be different, but not in a good way.

    Presidential announcements are supposed to show the candidate as a popular man (or woman) of the people in front of a cheering crowd of Americans. DeSantis is having a one-on-one with the world's richest man, an immigrant to boot.

    I also heard it will audio only. DeSantis is stealing a page from the Wendell Wilkie presidential announcement playbook.

    The positive spin is that DeSantis is avoiding the SwampMedia and employing alternative media...a bit of it's Me v. Them.

    At this point, it'll come down to DeSantis winning Iowa, doing very well in New Hampshire and Trump floundering in South Carolina against Nikki Haley and Tim Scott...

    ...then hoping for the best.

    But, my sense is that CNN's Trump Infomercial sealed the deal with GOP antiSwamp media. The GOP podcast world is now all-in on Trump, with very few exceptions.

    We'll see.
