A Pyrrhic victory (ˈpɪrɪk PIRR-ik) is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is tantamount to defeat.
Eastern Ukraine, CNN — Seldom in the history of warfare has so much been said, amid so much death, about a place that mattered so little – but that’s the Battle for Bakhmut for you. For now.
The leader of the Russian mercenary company Wagner claimed Saturday that his men had captured the town from Ukraine after “224 days of fighting.” Ukraine has denied the claim – and insisted that not only has Bakhmut not fallen but that it’s being flanked by Kyiv’s forces.
Whatever the situation actually is in Bakhmut, the Wagner group "won" all or maybe most of a city reduced to an unlivable smoldering pile of rubble. One Russian news anchor declared, “Mission accomplished” over the weekend. I doubt the Russian people will be seeing televised images of the destroyed city that the Russians claim as their prize.
