Both Donna and I have posted about this previously...see links. I am posting this largely because of CNN's headline and their use of the word "lie".

It's something of a philosophical question when defining what is and isn't a lie. The George Costanza rule is "it's not a lie if you believe it". That might work with isolated events. But a believer in a widely repeated falsehood can only take willful blindness so far. The Germans in the Nazi-era took it too extremes. Russian people today believe Putin's lies. The Germans and Russians can be partially excused as they are/were informed only be state-run media. What's the excuse of US election deniers? When a person's belief is refuted scores of times in various ways, then gullibility gives way to intentionally perpetuating a lie.

It is a lie to say that Biden didn't legitimately win the presidential election or that there are "serious concerns'. Not to mention, it's unpatriotic and anti-democratic. It doesn't matter if some people out of ignorance or delusional thinking believe otherwise---that includes Trump. It's a lie because the reality-based community (including the Georgia grand jury) knows it's false.

(CNN)A trove of newly-released text messages and emails have laid bare how the right-wing media giant operated with little regard for fact in the weeks and months following the 2020 presidential election. The correspondence reveals that the network’s senior-most executives and highest-profile hosts chose not to disclose what they believed to be the truth of the election out of fear that that the facts would alienate Fox News’ audience and throw the highly profitable business into ruin.

You are entirely ignorant of what goes on on Fox.

"You are entirely ignorant of what goes on on Fox." -Hate

And you, Bill, are entirely ignorant because of what goes on on Fox.

Hey, really well put, Curt. You totally nailed every salient point.

"You are entirely ignorant of what goes on on Fox." --HtS

It's the people who watch Fox News who are the most ignorant of what goes on at Fox. They are like the Germans and Russians I mentioned above. But there are limits to excusable obliviousness.

A lie is an attempt to deceive, that is it’s an attempt, by hook or by crook, to persuade someone to believe something that is not true. Truth being that which conforms to reality. If the person doing the persuading believes that what he or she is asserting is true, even though it is false, that person is usually not morally culpable for telling a lie, but what that person is asserting is still not the truth.

In instances when we cannot know for certain whether a person actually believes the falsehood that he or she is spreading, that doesn’t change the fact that the person is still asserting a falsehood (an untrue statement).

In those instances when we cannot know for certain whether the person believes his own false assertion we normally base culpability on whether a normal reasonable person could or should have known it was false. Willful ignorance does not erase a person's culpability.

Hate seems to have a hard time grasping that.

Thing is that Lead sees what's on Fox on average, an hour or two a day. You have myths spun by networks coveting their ratings

  6. by Ponderer on February 17, 2023 1:40 pm

An exciting lie will get more of an audience than the boring truth any day. That still doesn't make it the truth.

Washington Post: Trump campaign commissioned research that failed to prove 2020 election fraud claims

(CNN)A research firm commissioned by former President Donald Trump's 2020 campaign team to prove his electoral fraud claims instead failed to substantiate his theories, the
    Washington Post reported Saturday.

The Berkeley Research Group was commissioned to look into voting data from six states, according to the Post, and a source told the publication that the campaign team wanted about a dozen claims tested. People familiar with the matter told the publication that the findings did not match what the team had hoped for, and the findings were never released.

While some anomalies and "unusual data patterns" were found, the Post reported, they wouldn't have made a difference to President Joe Biden's victory.

The firm's findings also refuted some of Trump's voting conspiracies, including the identities of dead people used to vote and Dominion voting systems used to manipulate the outcome, the paper reported.

So if you look at the last three posts, this is nothing but an "assault".

I'm calling bullsht on their claims. prove me wrong. By numbers. not "feelings".

The credibility of Fox News has now been officially shot to hell. I've suspected for decades that some on air personalities didn't believe the bullshit they regularly spewed. And now they've been outed. It'll be interesting to watch how this affects their ratings, although it won't surprise me if practically all of their viewers stupidly continue to watch Fox News.

The credibility of Fox News has now been officially shot to hell.

"Now?" Really? Now? Please link us to evidence that you ever thought that Fox News had credibility. Now, really, effin now!

You do know that you're accepting as pure, unadulterated, established truth the pleadings of one side in a legal action, don't you?

Apparently, you and po...the first person here to get in line to join a lynch mob...are well matched. po can hold the noose while you hold both torches. Eh?

  12. by Donna on February 18, 2023 7:26 am

Actually I'm accepting what some Fox News personalities admitted, which is that they deliberately lied to their viewers.

"You do know that you're accepting as pure, unadulterated, established truth the pleadings of one side in a legal action, don't you?" -Hate

Well my goodness, Bill. If the "other side" of a legal action refuses to even respond to subpoenas or invokes The Fifth when deposed to hear their side of the case, I don't see how that could be blamed on us.

There is tons of evidence and hundreds of under oath testimonies that were given all supporting one side and presenting a unified explanation of the truth. And the other side responded basically with "No comment" when asked to present their version of what they know to be the truth. And the Republicans on the "other side" even refused to take part in the very hearings in which they would have been able to call their own witnesses in to present their "other side" of the story.

The "other side" essentially refused to even present it's "other side". Except on Fox and any other public forum where they were not under oath and could lie their asses off as much as they want to.

Just what in the fukk would you have us conclude from all that, Bill?

  14. by oldedude on February 18, 2023 7:38 am
Honestly, all you see is some backtracking on Trump. Nothing more. I can't count the number of times MSN has had to admit wrongdoing and false claims and lying on their "news." pedojr for one. Same thing with NYT, which I don't think is citable at any point anymore. It's more like aJ in the 1970's. Full of political hacks. Now they're just an extension of BBC (which isn't much better).

  15. by Ponderer on February 18, 2023 8:04 am

I'm not sure what your point is there, od. Could you explain it a little more?

  16. by HatetheSwamp on February 19, 2023 3:31 am

Well my goodness, Bill. If the "other side" of a legal action refuses to even respond to subpoenas or invokes The Fifth when deposed to hear their side of the case, I don't see how that could be blamed on us.

The one thing that I know I can count on here on SS is that you'll be around to prove that you are:

Most Likely to Join a Lynch Mob.

    Thanks.

Oh, can a corporation plead the Fifth? (I don't know why I'm asking a Bill of Rights question to a Big Brother lover. But, there it is.)
