“I’ve never fit neatly into any party box. I’ve never really tried. I don’t want to,” she added. “Removing myself from the partisan structure — not only is it true to who I am and how I operate, I also think it’ll provide a place of belonging for many folks across the state and the country, who also are tired of the partisanship.”

The announcement from Sinema comes just days after Democrats solidified a 51-49 majority in the upper chamber with Sen. Raphael Warnock’s win in Georgia.

The Swamp, loved so much by you progressives here, ain't all it was. C'mon join pb. Hate the Swamp.

That makes 3 independent senators who are being counted as Democrats. Bernie Sanders and Angus King are indies who caucus with the Dems. Sinema hasn't said which party she's going to caucus with but says that she's going to continue her committee assignments with the Dems.

Sinema is up for re-election in 2024. I wouldn't discount her chances. Sen. Mark Kelly who was just re-elected made a point of saying in his political ads that he's in the senate to represent Arizona's interests as opposed to Democratic Party interests and that he will continue to stand up to Biden when he disagrees with him.

Your take as an Arizonan in training will be interesting.

In many/most states, a candidate not backed by a major party, even an incumbent, couldn't prevail. But, in Arizona? Who knows.

pb is, of course, a big Sinema fan.

The concern among some Dems including myself is that by running as a liberal indie she'll split the Dem vote and make it easy for the GOP nominee to win.

"pb is, of course, a big Sinema fan." - Hts

Why? She almost always votes with the Dems. She's way more liberal than the most conservative Republican, certainly way more liberal than other politicians you like, like Ron DeSantis.

No doubt she became an indie because she knew that she'd probably get primaried in 2024.

Donna, that’s if the Democrats do run a candidate in the Senate primary. I could be wrong, but I do not believe that the Democrats field and run a candidate in the general election to oppose Bernie Sanders or Angus King.

  6. by Donna on December 10, 2022 10:30 am

I hope the Dems do that Curt, because we'd still be much better off with an indie Sinema who caucuses with the Dems than a GOP, especially a MAGA.

  7. by Donna on December 10, 2022 10:31 am

Btw, I meant to say "She's way more liberal than the most liberal Republican".

  8. by Donna on December 10, 2022 10:41 am

Btw, excellent point, Curt. I hadn't thought of that. I've been posting it on Facebook.

    Donna,

It should be obvious, after all these years, pb's a rather moderate conservative. He, for instance, has always favored legal abortion. He'd'a been happy if the Supreme Court had merely upheld the Mississippi law rather than overturn Roe, which he gets is bad law.

What pb's radical about is the Swamp. Sinema is a spanner in the works of the Swamp.

  10. by Donna on December 10, 2022 10:58 am

I disagreed with a couple of Sinema's votes, but she ain't no conservative, not even a moderate one.

Right. But she thwarted some of the Flatulent Fool's greatest evils. She has moxie. You Swampites hate that.
