If you have access to the NY Times, this is a very interesting article. Text with Russian audio of phone calls home. Includes descriptions of war crimes. Very disillusioned soldiers.

In phone calls to friends and relatives at home, Russian soldiers gave damning insider accounts of battlefield failures and civilian executions, excoriating their leaders just weeks into the campaign to take Kyiv.

Russian soldiers made thousands of calls from the battlefield in Ukraine to relatives at home. Here are their conversations. (Note: They contain explicit language.)

    Sorry.

    Pay wall.

There are two issues I still take the NYT seriously on: Supreme Court decisions, but only as far as analysis of the text of the decision itself...AND foreign affairs, when a Dem is President and the Times isn't tempted to trash the GOP in the White House...otherwise...!!!!!

I don't know if calling Putin a fool is apt but he ain't all there. Even though you missed the point of Trump saying that what Putin did with the Donbas was ingenious, Trump was right.

Putin is ingenious. And, to Trump's point, "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" in the White House is a Flatulent Fool.

I just finished Ken Follett's novel, NEVER, which takes the political environment that led to World War 1 and moves it to today. Scary.

Putin is an evil, psychotic, genius. But, Biden?

    Scary.

  2. by Donna on September 29, 2022 8:04 am

What did Putin do in Donbas that only a genius could have thought of?

I think the word "genius" is applied so much that it has lost its meaning. Too often it's applied by stupid people who are impressed with people of above average intelligence.

  3. by HatetheSwamp on September 29, 2022 8:15 am

    I don't disagree with that a lot.

What Trump said, and I heard every second of that interview, is that Putin took care to precede his military action with propaganda that could define it, at least among Russians and his allies. There's creativity and a dab of genius in that.

"That feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap," otoh, tells lies about his opponents and shouts, in effect, "GET OFF MY LAWN!

We clearly have a superior military, but, in leadership...

    We're overmatched.

That's pretty standard. Not at all genius.

There is not a dab of genius in that. Putin has lost credibility with his soldiers and now many Russian civilians. The low morale of the Russian Troops is why the Ukrainians have been pushing the Russians back. It's why Russian men are leaving Russia in droves.

Putin's propaganda only lasted until the Russian soldiers confronted the cold hard truth of reality. Putin's claim to the Russian people (and his soldiers in particular) that the Ukrainian wanted to be freed from Nazis and return to Mother Russia was quickly exposed as a demonstrable lie as this phone conversation between a soldier and his mother illustrates.

Hey, everyone. Mark down this date. Curt disagrees with Trump.

I know that this is a small site, but someone alert the NYT.

The biggest thing I see in this story are the quotes around the telephone calls. Who intercepted the phone calls? And why were they released? That does not add up. I don't disagree with that happening right now. I think the calls were fabricated by a news agency and put out as fact.

    OD,

From trenches, dugouts and in occupied homes in the area around Bucha, a western suburb of Kyiv, Russian soldiers disobeyed orders by making unauthorized calls from their cellphones to their wives, girlfriends, friends and parents hundreds of miles from the front line.

Someone else was listening in: the Ukrainian government.

The New York Times has exclusively obtained recordings of thousands of calls that were made throughout March and intercepted by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies from this pivotal location.

Reporters verified the authenticity of these calls by cross-referencing the Russian phone numbers with messaging apps and social media profiles to identify soldiers and family members. The Times spent almost two months translating the recordings, which have been edited for clarity and length.--NY Times

Curt- I'm not doubting what is going on after hearing it from (indirectly) from those in country. There are also "immigrations" from Russia to neighboring countries.

I just know the technology it takes to eavesdrop on phones. if you don't know the phone is coming up on a call. It's the needle in a needlestack.

To Donna (mainly)- The one thing Putin hasn't said yet is the use of Chemical/ biological weapons. I think that's interesting. He went straight to nukes to test the water out. My thought is that he'll use chemicals and respond with "well, you said I couldn't use nukes, you didn't say anything about chemicals!"
Just a thought. It would change the scales of the battle to kill thousands of Ukraine military (and civilians) which may solve his problems of taking territory.

  10. by Donna on October 3, 2022 9:37 am

The Biden Administration warned Putin against their use too. See link. Nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons are all considered WMD and their usage is forbidden by international law.

Yeah, that was in March. I was hoping for something more recent from either Europe, UN, or the US. thanks though.

Were you affected by Hurricane Ian? I just read that over a half million Floridians still have no electricity.

We dodged the bullet this time. The big cost of us being lucky was the annihilation of the Coral Coast, the Reservations in the middle of the state (Seminole county/ the Okefenokee), through Jacksonville. I was going to go help, but it was on our news the folks that usually show up (Dixie Navy, Project Rubicon, etc) are already deployed and doing their thing. My guess is there will be many "lost at sea" that were 5-6 miles inland during the surge.

Had it hit us like it was supposed to on that Mon/Tues, our house would be gone, and if we were here in the area, we'd be dead. So we're helping how we can. 9-Line apparel has a shirt that all the proceeds go to the victims. As well as the Red Cross (always a good bet).

    Thanks for asking though.

  14. by Donna on October 5, 2022 1:52 pm

Glad to hear you dodged that bullet. Sad that so many are hurting, though. There were quite a few deaths. Ian also created a lot of new homeless people. As global warming intensifies, adverse weather phenomena are also going to intensify.

In today's briefing by the governor and the Emergency Management group, they said that 85% of the power was hooked up in Ft Myers. That is phenomenal.

It seems to me that Florida’s government is very efficient in many ways.

I noticed that when we snowbirded there last winter.

  17. by oldedude on October 9, 2022 12:25 am
DiSantis said last night that 95% of electrical power has been restored. 1 week is what it took. If you go down to the coral coast, you still don't have a house, but contractors can start clearing and rebuilding immediately.
