Long article. I've quoted to only a small part of it.

In 33 states, clergy are exempt from any laws requiring professionals such as teachers, physicians and psychotherapists to report information about alleged child sexual abuse to police or child welfare officials if the church deems the information privileged.

This loophole has resulted in an unknown number of predators being allowed to continue abusing children for years despite having confessed the behavior to religious officials. In many of these cases, the privilege has been invoked to shield religious groups from civil and criminal liability after the abuse became known to civil authorities.


It's a complex issue, no doubt.

pb thinks of institutionalized religion as the spiritual Swamp. He's anti that, too.

All of the privileges granted to religious institutions that are not granted to other nonprofit institutions should be revoked. IMO.

    I was really disappointed in this. I'm not sure of the answer. If the priests, ministers, etc don't have client lawyer privilege then there are issues with that. AND there's issues if they do. In junior high (maybe a tad earlier) we started hearing about this. I thought this would be done in one or two years, and we STILL have it going on. Maybe again, it's like big dim cities where crime in amok. There's no consequences, so why not keep doing it. They need to go to prison hard time in gen pop. In a couple of years, they cease to be "inmates."

    I don't condemn the entirety of institutionalized religion, but child molestors have a long history of hiding under the cloak of religion, and it has never stopped. I also think that religious groups should pay taxes.
