I have no doubt that the historical data that the Theory is based on is important and demands careful study and examination even, especially, in America's public schools.

I also suspect that the protests against it in many parts of the nation are a legitimate response to the poor teaching of the Theory by public school teachers...

...but I couldn't imagine a more pathetic spokesperson or representative for the theory than Joy Reid.

After playing these clips, and more, from the interaction between Reid and Rufo, Greg Gutfeld, on his late night news/comedy FNC show opined of Joy, "What a host."

Bingo.

Joy's not alone.

There's an arrogance and sanctimony among so many of the advocates of Critical Race Theory, that I'm certain many people are predisposed to reject it before they know the first thing about it...based on the people who are its apostles and the way the Gospel according to Critical Race Theory is preached.

Oh, and note the fourth link. Joy's being lambasted for her faulty understanding of CRT.

My guess is that GOPs are going to ride the anti-CRT train right up to the 022 election. This is precisely the sort of outrage that draws people to the polls in an off year election.

And, as long as Fox and Newsmax, et.al. can play clips of angry, hateful CRT advocates like Joy Reid the chances of a GOP landslide in 022 increase.

    Hatethe,
You and I probably attended public schools in roughly the same era. American History as I was taught consisted of Pilgrims (whoosh, Quantum Leap) American Revolution, early America (whoosh, Quantum Leap) Civil War, Lincoln frees the slaves (whoosh, Quantum Leap) World Wars I and II (Summer vacation). Individual blacks were practically invisible and barely unmentioned in my history school books.

I certainly didn't learn in school about slave revolts and how they were brutally put down or Reconstruction and the response of the Ku Klux Klan or Jim Crow laws or red-lining of cities. However, at least I was taught the Civil War was about slavery and not about states' rights.

The term "critical race theory" could use some reworking by an advertising copywriter to make it more palatable to the public. Any thinking person realizes that there have been religious, ethnic and racial inequalities and worse in America's and other countries' histories.

    Curt,

Thanks for the article. The two of us are close in age. I'm certain that our education in American history in public school was very similar. I grew up in Pennsylvania, which was established in 1683. I might have had an education slightly at variance with yours because my education in early American history was mixed with Pennsylvania history and there was a subtext that, because of events that took place in Philadelphia, we live in the center of the universe. Still, your characterization of what I was taught in public school brings back memories.

My guess is that the two of us agree about this more than almost anything we've discussed over the years.

I'll repeat my contention that a part of the problem with CRT is that what many on the right know about comes through their knowledge that Joy Reid advocates it and the fact that she provides bushels of low hanging fruit for Fox News hosts and others on the right.

Also, as I understand it, many of the protests at school board meetings can be traced to what parents saw and heard from their child's computer during distance learning that took place during the pandemic.

As the article noted, central to the squawking is the NYT's 1619 PROJECT.

I believe that this is a discussion that will have legs. Expect it to shape, in a significant way, the GOP message in the 022 election.

I agree with your last paragraph. In lieu of any ideas or consistent governing philosophy I believe the Republicans will run on critical race theory, Mr. Potatohead and whatever the next triviality that they can muster up outrage about.
