(WSBTV)Walker suggested a different kind of debate, one modeled after the Lincoln-Douglas talks of 1858. He said the two candidates could talk about an unnamed bill supported by Warnock and President Joe Biden.
“He has to say why he feels that the new bill that they’re about to release is good for Georgia, and I get to defend why I think it’s not,” Walker said.
Warnock’s campaign said Walker’s proposal is not really a debate and it remains unclear which bill he would like to discuss.
The Lincoln–Douglas debates were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate. Each debate lasted about three hours; one candidate spoke for 60 minutes, followed by a 90-minute response and a final 30-minute rejoinder by the first candidate. The candidates alternated speaking first.
Currently, and mostly in high schools, the Lincoln-Douglas debate is a modified version of the historic debates. Each debater gets thirteen minutes of total speaking time, and three minutes of question time. The rounds take approximately 45 minutes in total. Each debater receives four to five minutes of preparation time to use between speeches however they like.
I could be wrong, but I can't imagine Hershel Walker doing well in any sort of debate no matter what format he agrees to. My guess is that he will never get into a debate with Warnock. If I were Walker's campaign manager, I'd only allow it if Warnock were way ahead in the polls.
