It's sad that so many Americans don't understand that the president has almost no control over inflation.

If we lose our democracy, it'll be because of widespread ignorance.

  2. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 9:58 am

No. It's when the President is a Dem, the President has almost no control over inflation.

When the President is a GOP, there is no problematic inflation.

  3. by Donna on June 15, 2022 10:07 am
Another example of how Americans, due to widespread ignorance, rejected a product that was of greater value because they mistakenly believed it was of lesser value. See the link below.

I'm beginning to think that democracy's days are numbered, and not just in the US. Canada is having some of the same problems because of an increasingly ignorant populace.

The guys who run China understand that in order to create and maintain a prosperous and successful nation, you need to have smart guys running the government, which cannot be guaranteed in a democracy.

Hts, you're living proof that one can be both educated and ignorant.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 10:10 am

Just for old times sake. As OD would have said at this point, this is a Republic, not a democracy.

  6. by Donna on June 15, 2022 10:14 am
More pearls of nonsense from your bottomless well of ignorance.

If course the same applies for any government system where the populace elects its leaders. And btw, all modern democracies are republics.

  7. by islander on June 15, 2022 1:47 pm

The United States is a democracy, since we the people, hold the ultimate political power. We’re NOT a “direct democracy,” but we are a “representative democracy.”

We can say we are a Republic in the sense that our elected representatives exercise political power. But we are NOT a pure republic.

We can say we are a “federal constitutional representative democracy.”
Or we can say we are a "federal constitutional republic."

When describing our system of government, “Republic” has the same meaning as the term “representative democracy.”

If anyone wants to argue over such a foolish distinction...be my guest LoL !!!

  8. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 1:54 pm

The US is a representative republic.

  9. by islander on June 15, 2022 2:54 pm

Donna-The real question is why they are so afraid of, or have such disdain for even the word "Democracy".

  10. by Donna on June 15, 2022 2:56 pm
    Because it sounds like "Democrat".

  11. by Donna on June 15, 2022 2:58 pm
And they prefer the term "republic" because it sounds like "Republican".

  12. by islander on June 15, 2022 3:00 pm

Ha ha! I think you might be on to something ! Clinking mugs

  13. by Donna on June 15, 2022 3:06 pm

Have you noticed that they all "correct" us on that? That's because they read from the same talking points either directly or through their favorite media source. Classic authoritarian model. Top-down, fall in line.

    They give me the creeps.

  14. by Donna on June 15, 2022 3:13 pm
After day one of the January 6 hearings, Republican Talking Points instructed them to respond in this way:

    1. Say that Liz Cheney was boring
    2. Say it was old news
    3. Change the topic to rising gas prices and inflation

Being the dutiful Republican the is, Hts employed all three.

  15. by islander on June 15, 2022 3:48 pm

I heard an apt description of Hell years ago.

"Hell is seeing the truth...too late !"

It must be hell for Hate and those like him now.

  16. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 3:58 pm

    Donna,

Are you actually suggesting that Lizzy wasn't boring. You don't think there was a more compelling way to present that information? Really?

And, duh. Of course there was nuthin new in the hearings...presented on TV, anyway.

What you're watching is the Jan 6th Committee Greatest Hits. It's a "Best of" album.

Sadly, it equates to, THE BEST OF THE 1910 FRUITGUM COMPANY." "Simple Simon says."

    Baha!

Have you checked 538? The Flatulent Fool's approval has fallen since the televised shebang started.

  17. by Donna on June 15, 2022 4:28 pm
The point is, Hts, -- and I'm sure you'll deny this -- but the only reason you said all three of those things is because everyone every wingnut news source was putting out those talking points.

  18. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 4:57 pm

    You're right.

Do you REALLY think having Lizzy read off a teleprompter was the best way to kick this off?

Are you surprised that Joe's still falling in the polls?

  19. by Donna on June 15, 2022 5:11 pm
What's wrong with reading off of a teleprompter? And why is that only pointed out when someone you don't like read from one?

Given the widespread ignorance of Americans -- and I'm not only talking about Republican voters -- I'm not surprised at all that Biden's poll numbers are in the toilet. In fact I spoke about that widespread ignorance earlier in this thread.

  20. by HatetheSwamp on June 15, 2022 5:37 pm

    Donna,

My sense of the rationale for televising the hearing in prime time was to inform people who had not been aware and to interest them in the crimes committed on Jan 6th.

Having a middle aged lady sitting still and reading for a half hour, no matter how compelling the prose?

    Not ideal.

    Ain't?

  21. by Donna on June 15, 2022 6:22 pm
You seem satisfied that Liz Cheney"s performance was subpar. So why are you making such a big fuss over her?

    I thought she did fine.

  22. by HatetheSwamp on June 16, 2022 3:02 am

I don't think I am. There are few people in DC with whom I'm more ideological compatible. But, the degree of her Trump derangement confounds me.

And, I thought she did what she did well enough. It's that the Committee launched its Prime Time extravaganza that way. It was an opportunity lost forever.

  23. by Donna on June 16, 2022 7:26 am
When you call someone like Liz Cheney "deranged", you sound like someone whose synapses aren't firing right - like you have a loose screw.

    But carry on.

  24. by HatetheSwamp on June 16, 2022 8:09 am

That's how I sound to you.

Cheney's consumed by her hatred of Trump, so much so that she's allowed herself to become the face of the other party's Show Trial Inquisition. It's one thing to despise Trump and to think he's despicable. I do that myself.

But, she was the third ranking GOP in the House in a year when the GOPs are going to seize control and keep, probably for at least three Congresses over something that turned out to be a tempest in a teapot.

    That's deranged.

  25. by Donna on June 16, 2022 8:16 am
No, it isn't, but good that you're so forthcoming in revealing your own detachment from reality for all to see.

  26. by HatetheSwamp on June 16, 2022 8:35 am

What isn't what? A tempest in a teapot?

Of course it is. Joe's election was confirmed on the day it was scheduled to be. He was immaculated on time, peacefully. Effin DOZENS of the rioters have been arrested. Many have already been convicted and are in prison, some for a looooooooong time.

You wanna guess why Joe's polls continue to fall while all of this damning evidence is unveiled?

    Only people with TDS care!
