A major lesson learned from Columbine is that a quick law enforcement response is essential in saving lives. Law enforcement in Uvalde didn't do that. CNN aired a harrowing video of frustrated and wailing parents being held back the sheriff deputies as the parents could hear gunshots.

Uvalde school shooter was in school for up to an hour before law enforcement broke into room where he was barricaded and killed him'

Uvalde, Texas (CNN)The gunman who killed 19 students and two teachers at a Texas elementary school Tuesday was on the premises for up to an hour before law enforcement forcibly entered a classroom and killed him, officials said Wednesday.

Someone I was talking to said that's because police are trained to place their own safety above the safety of citizens.

A Pew Research survey found that 81% of Democrats support stricter gun laws while only 20% of Republicans do.

    Donna,
That isn't true of my son and training he's received at the Oregon Police Academy and then at the Las Vegas Metro Police Academy. There are plenty of cops who run toward danger. My son has inserted himself into some rather dicey and dangerous situations to protect others. Besides his bachelors degree in criminology, he has a total of about a year in police academy training.

In Texas maybe not so much. As you can see from the links below, graduating from police academy is apparently not required in Texas. They talk about a "licensing" and "alternatives".

Thanks for your input, Curt. I posted that here precisely because I wanted your opinion on this. It sounds like according to you, the person I talked to could be right, but it depends on which police department we're talking about.

The delays and hesitation by the police in this case make me sick.

There has been a lot of talk recently about hiring reforms by police departments. Usually that talk is in relation to cops who are fired for being violence prone getting a job in another department.

This case in Texas maybe an example of hiring reform also requires that people be competent to be police. It's incomprehensible that not everyone of these officers knew that a critical factor in saving lives in a school shooting situation is a fast response. That they stood outside in the hallway looking for a janitor to find the key while children were being shot and bleeding out is revolting.

As I noted in the links above Texas seems to have a lower standard to become a police officer.

The sheriff(?) named McGraw was critical of the way that the commanding officer at the scene, Pete Arredondo, handled the situation. I get the strong feeling that Arredondo's going to be fired.

Someone on a Facebook friend's page accused the police at the scene of "valuing property over the lives of brown children" and my FB friend agreed with her "100%". It certainly was mishandled. But to accuse the police essentially of purposely allowing the mass murder of brown children becausecthey vslued oroperty iver their lives sounds like the type of hyperbolic nonsense we hear from wingnuts like Alex Jones. And I told him so.

Btw Arredondo is a Spanish name.

In a brief exchange with my police officer son, he expressed that he and his fellow cops were aghast and disgusted with the slow response of the Uvalde police.

In stark contrast was the appropriate and fast response of the Tulsa police last night.
