Sources said Smith was told by the Academy that he likely could be expelled for a decade or more. That possibility prompted Smith, who has been an AMPAS member since 2001, to jump today before he was pushed in hopes of defusing the situation.

Most people disagree with my support for Will Smith. I understand their rational. But as far as the academy's response and Will's response to the academy's response go, I couldn't care less.

    Once again, I tend to agree with you Donna. It was what Tiffany Haddish said that struck an emotional chord with me;

“When I saw a Black man stand up for his wife. That meant so much to me,” Haddish told People magazine (via EW) after the Oscars. “As a woman, who has been unprotected, for someone to say like, ‘Keep my wife’s name out your mouth, leave my wife alone,’ that’s what your husband is supposed to do, right? Protect you. And that meant the world to me. And maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives"

Stand up for his effin wife?

He committed battery. Over a joke he laughed at!

From what I can tell, the man is pu$$y whipped. Good for him. Let him give her a hug, but to commit black on black crime...in front of an, admittedly, miniscule TV audience?

    I can't see how that's acceptable!

  4. by islander on April 2, 2022 3:01 pm

That's exactly the kind of response I would expect from someone like you.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on April 2, 2022 3:32 pm

I wouldn't have pegged you as a supporter of black on black crime.

  6. by islander on April 3, 2022 5:22 am

And I’m not at all surprised that you’re one of those who find it comical to make fun of someone who is suffering from a physical ailment and that you simply cannot understand why a man would stand up to someone who made his wife the butt of such a “joke”.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on April 3, 2022 5:30 am

Chris Rock claims not to have known about the alopecia. No one has come forward with information that he did.

He seems to have meant to have made a GI Jane joke. And, clearly, that's how Smith took it when he laughed at the joke.

But, c'mon man! If Rock was mocking her alopecia, it was a cruel and tasteless joke.

How bout a little "Sticks and stones can break my bones...!"

What I don't get is you supporting Will Smith committing a crime in response to it!

  8. by islander on April 3, 2022 6:13 am

Will Smith didn't laugh at the joke.

His wife's medical condition was never kept secret. It was public knowledge and she has always been quite candid about it since being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease. In fact, in 2018 she discussed it on her Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk.

As far as the "crime" Will committed, I don't know why you'd be surprised that I'd support Will since when it comes to protecting my family and standing up for my wife, they'll always come first even if it meant committing a "crime" to do so.

  9. by HatetheSwamp on April 3, 2022 7:41 am

Will Smith did laugh. Watch the video.

Rock claims not to have known about the alopecia. I didn't.

The cops considered arresting Smith. If he'd been arrested, the fact that Rock said a bad thing wouldn't have been a defense.

As I think you know, isle, my wife is a cancer survivor. She underwent grueling chemotherapy treatments and she lost every hair on her head, eyelashes, eyebrows, nostril hairs. Everything. She was bald as a cue ball for quite some time.

If a guy had made a GI Jane joke about her, I would have laughed...because she would have laughed.

Will Smith did initially laugh. He only committed a crime of violence because of his wife.

    The violence wasn't justified.

  10. by islander on April 3, 2022 8:39 am
I've seen a video of him 'supposedly laughing at the joke' but it was two separate clips. One showing Chris Rock telling a joke, and then another showing Will laughing, probably at one of Chris' jokes.

If you can post the site showing Will actually laughing at the joke about his wife's illness post it so I can view it.

  11. by HatetheSwamp on April 3, 2022 8:51 am

The joke was about GI Jane...

...unless you have reason, beyond your own subjectivity...to believe Rock is lying.

  12. by HatetheSwamp on April 3, 2022 8:59 am

Heck, the news even reports that "Will Smith laughs."

Why do you suppose you were so insistent on denying what is obvious to everyone?

    Islander,
I saw a video on a legitimate news source (I don't recall where, it might have been CNN) showing Will Smith laughing at the GI Jane joke while his unamused wife shoots Smith an annoyed look.

Alopecia is the medical term for baldness. It's not life-threatening. It happens to most men and about half the women as we age. Bill Maher remarked it's not as if Jada Pinkett Smith had leukemia and Chris Rock was making fun of her life-threatening disease.

I too have alopecia. I'm thinking about starting a GoFundMe page so I can have enough money to forget about my hair loss.

  14. by Donna on April 3, 2022 10:56 am
Will laughed at the GI Jane joke. Then the camera cut away, and I think probably Will noticed that Jada wasn't happy about the joke. Or maybe he impulsively laughed at first and then realized it wasn't appropriate. I've done that.

  15. by Donna on April 3, 2022 11:11 am
Personally I would never joke about a someone's mental or physical condition. I certainly would never equate a woman in her prime losing her hair with an old man who has male pattern baldness. My close friends, even Facebook friends I've never met tend to be compassionate.

  16. by HatetheSwamp on April 3, 2022 11:22 am

Based on what do you think that Chris Rock was making light of her physical condition?

Are you suggesting that any joke, no matter how tasteless, justifies the sort of physical violence Smith engaged in.

  17. by islander on April 3, 2022 12:31 pm

Curt, my guess is that you saw the same video I did and that Hate posted. It shows Chris Rock telling the joke. It then shows a shot of Will Smith laughing. It doesn’t pan out to Will laughing at the joke about his wife.

Alopecia isn’t the medical term for male pattern baldness. They are two different things.

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease and one of the symptoms is the persons hair falling out in clumps. The body’s immune system attacks the persons hair follicles.

I felt the same way as Tiffany Haddish when she said,

“When I saw a Black man stand up for his wife. That meant so much to me,”

“As a woman, who has been unprotected, for someone to say like, ‘Keep my wife’s name out your mouth, leave my wife alone,’ that’s what your husband is supposed to do, right? Protect you. And that meant the world to me"

I can understand that. What will did dealt a blow to the stereotype of the black male disrespecting his wife and women in general.

    Islander,
Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss including male pattern baldness.

Jada Pinkett Smith may have Alopecia Areata (patchy baldness) or perhaps female pattern baldness. Judging by the CNN photo of her at the Oscars, she may have a receding hairline. Her buzzcut doesn't show the patchiness characteristic of Alopecia Areata.

"Based on what do you think that Chris Rock was making light of her physical condition?"

    Obviously he was.

"Are you suggesting that any joke, no matter how tasteless, justifies the sort of physical violence Smith engaged in."

I don't know if that "justifies" physical violence, but it certainly provokes that possibility.

Here are a couple of links that describe the difference between male pattern baldness and the disease Will's wife suffers from, 'Alopecia Areata'.

  21. by HatetheSwamp on April 4, 2022 6:42 am

But, Donna, in the moment, Rock said, "It was a GI Jane joke."

I don't get how you self-proclaimed love and tolerance people can justify your...as po would say...baseless...condemnation of Chris Rock without evidence. I've asked y'alls to show evidence that he knew she has alopecia.

    You always just ignore me.

    What's this hate all about?

  22. by islander on April 4, 2022 9:28 am

I think you are confusing the fact that some of us can understand what compelled Will to do what he did without condemning Chris Rock.

Will apologized to Chris and Chris didn’t press charges.

“If” Chris didn’t know Will’s wife was suffering from Alopecia and thought her shaved head was just a different hair style she liked, then he wasn’t making a joke about her disease, but I can also understand what compelled Will to do what he did if he believed Chris did indeed know.

  23. by HatetheSwamp on April 4, 2022 10:20 am

Ah, if the rest of us could understand like UNDERSTAND MAN! U

  24. by islander on April 4, 2022 3:13 pm

It's ok, Hate. I don't expect you to understand a lot of what we discuss here.

I can tell by your many childish responses that 'you' don't understand. But don't presume that nobody else understands.

I can tell by their intelligent responses that they have a good understanding of both sides even when we might disagree.

  25. by Donna on April 4, 2022 5:29 pm
Hts: It was also a bald joke that was made at Ms. Smith's expense. I wouldn't have even joked about a man's male pattern baldness. I acknowledged in another thread that if Rock didn't know about her alopecia, then I forgive him. I would have thought that you'd have remembered that. You even commented in that conversation.

I don't love or tolerate everyone, nor do I hate you. But I probably should ignore you more than I do.

  26. by HatetheSwamp on April 5, 2022 3:42 am

    Donna,

No matter what else you can say about Jada Pinkett Smith, she's an extremely attractive woman. If she's ill, it's not obvious. There's no insult in the suggestion that she could reprise SuperBabe Demi Moore.

And, c'mon. Chris Rock was being paid to tell jokes about the members of the Academy who were present. There was no insult. Only a paid-for joke.

Y'know, since it happened, I've been thinking about using this event to make universal point. So, I will.

This is precisely why people despise your Blue MAGA Swamp.

    Chris Rock spoke freely...

...and, when it comes to it, your side hates that. You always do.

Your side cancels as naturally as you breathe. Will Smith, in that moment, became all y'all. He punished speech that he personally considered to be offensive...

    ...with his effin bare hand!!!!

    What a progressive hero, eh?

My sense is that who you support in this is, roughly, breaking down on Big Brother progressive v. libertarian lines.

So, go ahead. Endorse the violent suppression of speech. It's what you Blue MAGAs do. It's who you are. Go for it...

    ...again...

    ...still.
