Finally. Twenty years after the U.S. invaded, the last military flight took off from Kabul airport a day earlier than expected. The withdrawal came after a last spasm of violence. Now the Taliban is in charge again.

So what was accomplished for all those lives lost and the billions spent? If there's any lasting benefit it is that some of the people of Afghanistan, in particular women, got a taste of education and the benefits that it can bring.

    What was accomplished?

There've been 9 11 type killings of Americans on American soil.

I'm absolutely convinced that, if any of you have enough integrity, you'll come to agree that Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, disastrously altered by Joe Biden, was a disaster!

    That's an accomplishment?!?

    Oops. No 9 11...

  4. by Curt_Anderson on August 30, 2021 2:55 pm
    HtS,
That would have been coincidental not causal.

Anyway, there have been fatal terrorist attacks in the US: Fort Hood, San Bernardino, LAX, Boston Marathon...

Also our allies have endured terrorist attacks: Charlie Hebdo in Paris, various attacks in the UK...

  5. by HatetheSwamp on August 30, 2021 3:16 pm

My guess is that the magnitude and number of terrorist attacks will increase and I'll be able to say that I opposed this from the moment Trump announced it.

I hope that four or five years from now I'll be proved to be wrong and that each of you will rub my nose in it.

That prediction might come true... because of US White nationalists groups, which are on the DHS terror list.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on August 30, 2021 3:29 pm

Perhaps, Donna. But, I seriously doubt it.

The Taliban had nothing to do with planning or carrying out 9/11. The 9/11 attacks were carried out almost entirely by Saudis who objected to US military bases that were built on what they considered to be holy ground in Saudi Arabia.

"Since Saudi Arabia houses the holiest sites in Islam (Mecca and Medina), a number of Muslims, including Bin Laden and his supporters, were outraged at the permanent presence of non-Muslim U.S. military personnel. The continued presence of U.S. troops after the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia was also one of the stated motivations behind the September 11th terrorist attacks and the Khobar Towers bombing. The date of the 1998 United States embassy bombings was eight years to the day (August 7) that American troops were sent to Saudi Arabia."

Neither the Taliban nor ISIS have ever shown an interest in attacking the US homeland. They've always been focused on establishing power in South and West Asia.

Wow, Donna, you are frequently conveniently naíve but you don't normally stretch your convenient thinking all the way into an outright lie.

9 11 was not an attack by the Saudis. It was an attack on the United States by Al Qaeda which was based in Afghanistan.

  10. by Ponderer on August 31, 2021 6:31 am
I said it was an attack "BY Saudis", not by the Saudi Arabian government, which I guess is what you think I meant. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals. And yes, of course the attacks were carried out by al Qaeda, mainly for the reason I said, and the Taliban didn't have anything to do with planning or carrying out the attacks.

    Everything I'm saying is factual.

That last post was by me - Donna.

  12. by HatetheSwamp on August 31, 2021 6:35 am

    po,

What you're saying is meaningless. The Taliban provided cover for Al Qaeda, and, thanks to Joe, they certainly will again.

This is just one analysis, but maybe you can learn something from it.
