Featuring Hope Hicks, Michael Cohen and a memorable cast of characters from Trump-world. I am hoping that Kato Kaelin will make an appearance.

(PBS)Donald Trump has sought every opportunity to slow the four criminal cases against him.

But now, the former president can no longer delay or dismiss what’s been dubbed his “hush money” case. Barring a last-minute intervention, the trial will begin April 15.

For the first time in American history, a former president will be tried in a court of law.

Trump is accused of falsifying business records to hide the fact that he sought to silence allegations of extramarital affairs that surfaced during his 2016 presidential campaign. At the heart of the alleged scheme is a $130,000 payment to Stephanie Clifford, the adult film actor known as “Stormy Daniels.”

Live Updates: Trump’s Manhattan Criminal Trial Begins With Jury Selection
Mr. Trump seemed alternately irritated and exhausted during pretrial arguments on Monday, sometimes smirking and scoffing, but also appearing to nod off, his mouth slack and his head drooping to his chest. After the trial got underway in the afternoon, he chuckled when Justice Merchan told the first group of 96 prospective jurors that he would ensure a fair trial.

Mr. Trump, who might take the witness stand in his own defense, has denied the sexual encounter with Ms. Daniels.

    HtS,
What Dershowitz said is an "outrage, a violation of all of our rights" is that the trial isn't televised.

Dershowitz also makes a confusing circular argument about hush money. He said that if all campaign expenditures must be reported to the FEC and hush money is an illegal expense then then why would a person report it? So somehow it should be OK. What?

By the way, Kelly talks about Trump's affair with Stormy Daniels as if it were accepted fact, neither of her guests corrected her. Trump has denied he had affair with Daniels. IOW, Kelly and guests don't believe Trump's denials. Does anybody believe Trump? This is the court of public opinion that will hurt Trump's election chances. It's like when OJ was found not guilty of murder but most people believed he is a murderer.

  4. by Ponderer on April 15, 2024 1:56 pm

Curt, I loved his comments outside the court just now. He made sure that he spewed every single last lie he believed he could get away with, without violating some gag order or other. Classic. He's a wet, cornered rat at this point.

Popcorn, some nachos, and a tall glass of my new favorite Electric Limousine Woke Lib'rul Wine...

    No kidding! It's pretty good!

    Ponderer,
I heard Trump's whining about potentially missing his son's high school graduation. We are supposed to believe he is a family man who hates missing important moments in his children's lives. 🙄 🤨 Melania gave birth to the couple's only son, Barron, on March 20, 2006. Adult film star Stormy Daniels and Trump had their sexual encounter in July 2006.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on April 15, 2024 3:50 pm

Trump is being prohibited from attending the graduation.

Ain't America great? Talk about the politicization of the justice system.

Tell me. Who do you think moderate and independent voters are going to sympathize with over this?

"Tell me. Who do you think moderate and independent voters are going to sympathize with over this?" ---HtS

    Trump's wife Melania.

  9. by Ponderer on April 15, 2024 4:19 pm

I'll bet Melania is glad he couldn't make it. For Baron's sake. What an embarrassment his father must be to him. That kid is no fool.

It's a good thing that moderate and independent voters will believe the evidence that their own eyes and ears tell them about this blatant, bloviating, blustering, bullshitting blowhard, and not the flailing cry-baby, poor me, wah-wah lies of a career criminal who is finally having to face the consequences for his life long wiping of his ass with the law.

    A landslide I'm tellin' ya.

  10. by Ponderer on April 15, 2024 4:23 pm

Does it even matter... do you think... to moderate and independent voters that he has never denied the actual charges of his crime? His legal defense in no way includes the concept that "He never did it". Why would moderate and independent voters be stupid enough to not comprehend the significance of that like the rest of sane America can?

  11. by HatetheSwamp on April 15, 2024 4:38 pm

I think, Curt, that common sense moderate and independent voters will sympathize with Baron. And, blame the politicized Judiciary.

    po,

Where'd you get the idea that Trump hasn't denied the charges? From the metaphorical Rachel? Do you think that he pled guilty?

    Nuh uh.

Democrat Jonathan Turley: "This is legally absurd."

    View Video

  13. by Curt_Anderson on April 15, 2024 5:15 pm
Turley is wrong about the history of this case. It's been delayed since 2019 because Trump initially claimed presidential immunity so he didn't respond to Cyrus Vance's subpoenas. Trump's co-conspirator, Michael Cohen, was tried and sentenced during Trump's presidency.

Trump since leaving office has employed various numerable legal delaying tactics, including three delay attempts last week. Turley was also wrong about the facts. Vance did not decide not to prosecute. His term as DA ended so Vance passed the ongoing investigation to his successor, Alvin Bragg.

Has anybody said that Trump wouldn't be in this mess if had simply paid Stormy Daniels out of his own pocket instead of involving Michael Cohen and trying to make the hush money look like a legitimate campaign expense?

    Curt,

I love what you think is fact based on your intense study of your Holy Trinity.

Unlike you, I'm not a former Supreme Court clerk. But, I know that my Legal Goobers are unanimous on this. So far, in this lawfare scheme, they're batting 1.000.

I'm just wondering what the differences between trumpster and bubba cliton are. Let's see one did it while he was in orifice office. So I guess that's a difference. But I'm still trying to figure out what is "illegal" about it? I know the DOJ/FBI (as crooked as they are) wouldn't take the case AT ALL. So it's not a "tax" thing. So there has to be some NY "law" against entering a legal contract (we called them "Non-Disclosure Agreements" (NDA) in almost every job I've had). I always thought they were common, especially in lawsuits where they are considered common practice. Like in a lawsuit that the media puts out as they settled for an "undisclosed amount." That means there was an NDA signed.

But I guess I'll just wait for the former Supreme Court clerk to explain why bubba can and trumpster can't do this.

  17. by oldedude on April 17, 2024 2:46 am
I also know that "Stormy" LOST a prior lawsuit because she disclosed the agreement, and therefore violated the contract of the NDA.

So I'm all ears about the "illegality" of this.
Oh. please cite the NY statute since that's where he's charged. And the feds wouldn't take it.

  18. by HatetheSwamp on April 17, 2024 3:24 am

... But I'm still trying to figure out what is "illegal" about it? I know the DOJ/FBI (as crooked as they are) wouldn't take the case AT ALL.

    Precisely.

No one, even Joe's Ultra MAGAs, think that behavior is virtuous. I do recall that our SwampDems here were very unoffended by Bubba Clinton's getting bjs from a young, 20something White House intern... supportive, even.

    But, the crime Trump committed?

I wonder if, for Curt, this ain't just a type of soft porn.

  19. by oldedude on April 17, 2024 5:10 am
I think "soft" porn is questionable, I mean, I'm sure he watched the Boebert "porn" for many, many, hours even after the "faux trauma" of being forced to watched it for hours.

  20. by Indy! on April 17, 2024 11:55 am

Clinton's misstep - while distasteful - was not illegal. His "lie" was ridiculously innocuous. In the end, it was the Rs who could not find the "crime".

Trump has broke the law by using campaign funds to pay off a hooker. He committed an actual crime.

I could not care less about either one - but I can see there is a difference.

  21. by oldedude on April 17, 2024 12:16 pm
That's interesting because it's not in the charges and would have been handled by FEC. It's a local case. Ergo, by definition, it has to be a state law he broke.

  22. by Indy! on April 19, 2024 9:32 am

Breaking state laws counts as a crime.
