Donald Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba on Tuesday suddenly backed off her own claim that the presiding judge in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial had a conflict of interest, less than a day after she made the initial court filing.
Shortly after Carroll's lawyer filed [a letter refuting the claim], Habba insisted she never accused the judge of a conflict of interest — and that she simply wanted to "inquire" about the Post's reporting, which she insisted she played no role in beyond responding.
"To be clear, this claim originated solely from the New York Post, where it was purportedly sourced from a 'former Paul Weiss partner who asked not to be named', I played no part in uncovering this information; have never communicated with the unnamed Paul Weiss partner; and have no personal knowledge as to whether the information contained in the article is true or false," she wrote in a letter filed roughly two hours after the sanctions-motion threat.
In light of the denial by Carroll's lawyer, Habba said, "this issue has seemingly been resolved."
Alina Habba May Have Used Fake Person in Trump Case: E. Jean Carroll Lawyer
Trump attorney Alina Habba may have made up a fake person to push her arguments in the former president's defamation case, the lawyer for columnist E. Jean Carroll alleges.
In a Tuesday letter to the judge presiding over the defamation trial, Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, raised her concerns that Habba used a fake person to promote her accusations that she and the judge had a conflict of interest.
