As I've said, I'm a huuuuuuuuuge fan of the early Eagles. Meisner was the least of the four, but still, as po'd say, EFFIN good.

If you listen to songs by the Eagles up to 1977, Randy's the one who's carrying the high harmonies. I loved his lead vocals on Take It To The Limit, which is one of my all time favorites.

Btw, thanks for posting that sad news as well as the video, which was a superb choice. I got choked up and teary-eyed watching it.

Too bad about Randy. Basically got a bad deal with the Eagles. I wasn't a big fan of the band - hated that Cali country rock thing for the most part when it was popular. But in the early '00s - they came here and one of my friends wanted to see them. This was after the Eagles ticket gouging era so it was reasonably priced and I'd never seen them so we went. It was all the main players - Henley, Frey, Walsh, Schmit, Felder(?)... no Meisner of course - plus the touring players. They put on a great show - 3+ hours that didn't feel too long or too short. Played everything to perfection you'd want to hear from the Eagles and a few solo songs from Henley, Frey and Walsh that were mandatory. Not my favorite show ever by a long shot - but definitely a really great evening of music.

I went to a pretty incredible Eagles concert, too, at the Hollywood Bowl during the Hell Freezes Over tour around '97, which was my first and only Eagles concert. God, they were so tight musically, I cried.

My brother went to a Hell Freezes Over concert. He loved it.

Sometimes you see a band and they do such a great show you really don't need to see them again. That's how it was with the Eagles (not that I would go again anyway 😉 ). But seeing them a second time they might be fighting or drunk or whatever and then you have those memories to detract from that perfect first show.

I love them...especially the early stuff you don't like, but the concerts are just like listening to the recordings. I agree. Once is enough.

I like their early stuff better than their later stuff (especially the post-break up stuff which is mediocre at best). What I meant was I did not like the California country rock movement in general. The Eagles were a part of that, but certainly not the worst part of it. Thought it was a bad direction for rock to go and led to disco and the classic rock era that were both detrimental to rock and roll in general. They were also way overplayed while I was growing up - especially the Hotel California era. I only owned one Eagles album - the first greatest hits album from the Meisner era.

There's no music I don't like from that era. I've always liked country and southern rock. But I also like blues-based rock like Zeppelin, Bad Company, Cream, Foghat, etc. I've always been a huge Doobie Brothers fan. I've seen them about 15 times. High on my list of rock faves also: Tom Petty, Rush, Pink Floyd, and Steeley Dan. I'm not too big on the hair bands, punk, or death metal though. But from the 90s I like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Porcupine Tree. I also like rockin' blues, like Stevie Ray Vaughn who's my fave all time guitarist.

Southern rock is a totally different thing than country rock.

  12. by Donna on July 30, 2023 7:14 am

I know, but some musical artists played both styles, like the Allman Brothers and the Marshall Tucker Band, both of which I'm fans of.
