I don't care what anybody says. Trump's trials won't help his poll numbers.

Something strange is going on. Just this week:

  • Fox & Friends' Steve Doocy made the case for the Covid vaccine: "It will save your life."
  • Fox's Sean Hannity told his audience to "please take Covid seriously...I can't say it enough, I believe in the science of vaccination."
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told Americans to get vaccinated "as quickly as possible."
  • Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) got vaccinated on camera saying the Covid vaccine is "safe and effective."
  • Wingnut Ben Shapiro tweeted, "Get vaxxed. I did. My wife did. My parents did."

There are a number of possibilities to explain this apparent change of heart.
1. Republicans may have decided that caring about the health and wellbeing of their constituents is the moral and right thing to do.
2. Republicans realized that their voters in red districts and red states are disproportionately unvaccinated and dying of Covid. It occurred to Republican politicians that it will have a negative effect on Republican voter turn-out if their voters are dead.

I doubt it's the first possibility. The second is the more probable. I have a hunch that the GOP hired a pollster who discovered that voters prefer politicians who care if they live or die. Biden gets around a 70% approval rating on his handling of Coronavirus. Republicans probably saw internal polling that shows them with an inverse of Biden's numbers on the issue of Covid.

    Oy!

Have you forgotten that it was GOP President Donald J Trump, Sean Hannity's hero, who made the vaccine possible!!!!!?

Interestingly, all these GOPs are doing is suggesting free people decide to be vaccinated.

Dems, on the other hand, assault the character of people who remind them there are freedoms here.

Why did Republican politicians suddenly start recommending that people get vaccinated now? Why didn't they do that earlier this year when the vaccine became available? It's as if it recently became a Republican talking point to advocate for getting vaccinated.

The answer couldn't be more obvious: Most Americans who are getting sick and dying from COVID are unvaccinated, and most unvaccinated Americans are Republican.

    Donna,

Are you certain that you aren't falling for the woke myth?

GOPs defended the vaccines even Joe and Kammy cast doubt on them and, while they always resisted Big Bro interference with individual rights, they've always looked on the vaccines with favor.

From what I've learned two groups of people resist the vaccines. Your son's group, the politically unattached. And, people of color.

    Yes, I'm certain.

Thanks for this, Donna, but it could not be more difficult to decipher. These are people who IDENTIFY as GOP or Dem and, presumably, the percentages are of the total population.

It's possible to make some sense of this, I'm certain but only some sense.

The survey results show very clearly that Republicans are much more likely to be unvaccinated than Democrats.

    Self identified GOPs.

I don't recall. How many Independents. How many unregistered?

From the stats under "Figure 2" in the article:

Wait And See / Definitely not get the vaccine

    Democrat 39% / 12%
    Republican 41% / 67%

NOTE: Party identification includes independents who lean towards either party.

There's also this, from a piece in The Atlantic entitled "Vaccinated America Has Had Enough" by David Frum (link below):

"In April, people in counties that Joe Biden won in 2020 were two points more likely to be fully vaccinated than people in counties that Donald Trump won: 22.8 percent were fully vaccinated in Biden counties; 20.6 percent were fully vaccinated in Trump counties. By early July, the vaccination gap had widened to almost 12 points: 46.7 percent were fully vaccinated in Biden counties, 35 percent in Trump counties. When pollsters ask about vaccine intentions, they record a 30-point gap: 88 percent of Democrats, but only 54 percent of Republicans, want to be vaccinated as soon as possible. All told, Trump support predicts a state’s vaccine refusal better than average income or education level."
