One of my friends, a rheumatologist, told me about a conversation that he just had with a patient, a Trumper in her seventies. It's a fair assumption that she has a fairly serious disease or otherwise she would not be seeing my friend. I will try to recount the conversation as he reported it to me. Needless to say he did not share any names or identifiable information about the woman.

Doctor: Have you been vaccinated for Covid-19?

Patient: No.

Doctor: Why not? You are in a high-risk category.

Patient: Because I don't trust Democrats.

Doctor: Well, there are Republicans who have been vaccinated.

Patient: Are you a Democrat?

Doctor: That is not relevant.

Patient: Do you vote for Democrats?

Doctor: Yes I do.

Patient: Then I don't trust you.

Doctor: So will you stop all the medications I prescribed for you?

Patient: Maybe I will!

My doctor friend, who is 70 years old, said to me, "I never thought I'd say this but I am looking forward to retirement. I am exhausted dealing with patients like her."

After hearing his story I said to my friend you should tell her and patients like her that Trump bragged about his Project Warp Speed and his part in getting vaccinations available. Not to mention Trump himself and his family have been vaccinated.

My friend I said next time he will use that line with his recalcitrant Republican patients who oppose the vaccine.

They'll just say they don't believe it.

Did you know that Biden is letting anyone cross our southern border? That's what my mom reported to me a few weeks ago. Said she found out about it from something that was sent to her in the mail. I told her it was nonsense. She didn't comment.

    **sigh**

My dad was conservative, but he would always listen to reason... until 2008 when Obama was elected. Then all reason went out the window and he become a birther and seemed to believe every piece of disinformation about Obama. I tried to reason with him numerous times and finally gave up. It was hard for me to watch this happen to someone I loved and respected so much.

    Donna,
Your dad sounds like my late father. When I visited my parents in 2008, my dad said Obama wasn't born in the US. I said, Obama produced his birth certificate. My dad said birth certificates can be faked. I replied that's true. But I reminded him that cousin of mine had done some family research and found the passenger manifests with my grandparents' names who came to American in the 19th century on separate ships.

I pointed out that Hawaii is the one state in the Union that a person can't enter surreptitiously on foot. So, if Obama wasn't born in the US he must have arrived on an airplane or a ship. We know when and where my grandparents arrived in the US. If Obama was born in Kenya or someplace, there would be a passenger list showing that Obama and his mother arrived in Hawaii in the early 1960's since we know he was raised there. Why haven't Trump and the Birthers produced evidence of infant Obama arriving in Hawaii? Dad didn't have an answer but I am sure he voted for McCain who was born in Panama.

Eight years later, though my dad voted for every Republican presidential candidate at least as far back as Eisenhower, maybe Dewey, he couldn't get himself to vote for Trump. He said he wasn't comfortable with a Trump who he said was too cozy with Putin and the Russians. He was ready to vote for a minor party candidate, maybe the Libertarian, in the 2016 election but was hospitalized and missed voting in a presidential election for the first time in almost 70 years.

That's an outstanding counter argument to Obama birtherism. I wish I had thought of it when my dad was alive. He died in Oct 2015. Due to his failing heart, he stopped following politics around the same time Trump announced his candidacy. Knowing my dad, he would have agreed with Trump on many issues, but being that my dad was such a straight-laced guy, he would have detested a lot of other things Trump said and did.

Dad was a big Mitt Romney fan. Being that Mitt came out so strongly against Trump, I doubt that Dad would have voted for Trump. Dad always voted and never missed a presidential election, but he never voted for 3rd party candidates, so there's an outside chance that he would have crossed over and voted for Biden like when he voted for Carter in '76, although Harris probably would have made him pause.

    Two comments.

    1. Curt, as reliable as I consider you to be, you gave us a third hand version of what the patient said, as it was related to you by your friend who reacted with hyper emotionality.

    2. Donna and Curt, you woke Swampcult Obamaphiles can be so cute when you're discussing people who don't fall prostrate at the feet of The ONE. And, I thought those days were over!

  5. by Donna on July 20, 2021 7:27 am
One doesn't have to "fall prostrate" to Obama to reject birtherism. **rolling eyes**

    Donna,

This fascinating to me beyond description.

Two vastly different universes of people react to Obama and to Trump in precisely the same way.

There are some who are besmitten by Obama. Others respond in that way to Trump.

And, I understand perfectly well that Obama Derangement Syndrome exists in the same way that TDS exists in the real world. Back in the day, we saw, on the old forum, tons of vicious and virulent Obama hate.

Many people who are Obamaphiles also suffer from TDS and the same is true among people who love Trump and hate Obama.

Another way of saying what I said about Curt and you is that you exhibit symptoms of Obamaphilia and TDS.

And, that's fine...unless you live in denial.

I’m sorry, but it’s too late.

“I’m admitting young healthy people to the hospital with very serious COVID infections,” wrote [Dr.] Cobia, a hospitalist at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham [Alabama], in an emotional Facebook post Sunday. “One of the last things they do before they’re intubated is beg me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them that I’m sorry, but it’s too late.”

    HtS,
What else is there to say but sorry, it's too late? What would you say, congratulations to you and the other 99% in the COVID ward for exercising your freedom to choose not be vaccinated?

  12. by HatetheSwamp on July 22, 2021 3:30 am
    Just, curious.

How often do you suppose the doc has spoken those tender words? 10,000, a million?

  13. by Donna on July 22, 2021 8:39 am
Ht s- What would be your response to them if you were their doc?

  14. by HatetheSwamp on July 22, 2021 8:48 am
Sadly, I'm not as compassionate or tenderhearted as this healer.

I'd say that the vaccine won't help at this point but that, with the many advances in treatment, there's nearly a 100% chance that the person will recover...

...that is, if the patient is not older than 80 or morbidly obese.

I'd assure them that I'll do all I can for them and that I expect to be signing their discharge papers before long...AS I HAVE FOR MY LAST 50 OR SO COVID PATIENTS.

  15. by HatetheSwamp on July 22, 2021 8:55 am
    BTW, I just checked.

In the last 7 days, Alabama has averaged slightly more than 1,000 new cases per day...

...and 5 deaths per day...less than half of one percent!

Truly, COVID, by now, ain't as lethal as the flu!

You woke big bro progressives are drama monarchs!

    Donna,

You know me on this. Every time I traveled before the vaccines became available, I took every precaution to avoid being infected. We rushed to get in line as soon as vaccines were available. When we might have been exposed to COVID recently, we self quarantined.

But, these days in Alabama far less than one percent of people infected with COVID die...and, very few are infected.

I read the whole Facebook post. Clearly, the sky is falling!

  18. by Donna on July 22, 2021 10:52 am
I don't understand your apparent psychological need to repeat over and over that you received COVID shots. I think we all understood that the first time you posted it.

Medical professionals like Dr. Cobia are justifiably concerned that we might be heading for a repeat of last December and January where many hospitals resembled MASH units.

    Do you think that's good?!
    Alabama
    CASES DAILY AVG.-- 1,047
    HOSPITALIZED DAILY AVG. -- 533
    DEATHS DAILY AVG. -- 4.9

"COVID-19 appears to be more contagious and to spread more quickly than the flu. Severe illness such as lung injury is more frequent with COVID-19 than with influenza. The mortality rate also is higher with COVID-19 than the flu.

So far, more than 32 million people have had COVID-19 in the U.S. So far, more than 580,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the U.S. in 2020 and 2021.

By comparison, during the 2019-2020 flu season in the U.S., about 38 million people had the flu and about 22,000 people died of the flu."

    Chicken Little AKA Curt,

These days with the vaccines and advanced therapeutics, COVID is little more bother than the flu.

It appeared a yearish ago that the sky might be falling.

    It ain't.
