When Kevin McCarthy sold his soul to the devil in exchange for getting the job of Speaker, part of the bargain was to fulfill a promise McCarthy made to the rightwing fringe and release January Sixth security camera footage to FOX News.

The wingnut argument is that the Democrats had their chance to show videos giving their view of the January 6th assault on the Capitol so now Republicans should have their chance to show their side of the story. Some Republicans have sought to minimize the events of that day to not much more than a slightly unruly Capitol tour. Tucker Carlson will be able to cherry-pick video of the MAGA crowd not breaking windows, not assaulting officers, not hunting down members of Congress, not vandalizing and not threatening to hang Mike Pence. But Republicans are mistaken if they think any of that exonerates the rioters.

Here's what that's like: a criminal holds up a bank and the crime is captured on surveillance video. In his defense, the bank robber plays the portions of the video where he is not yet breaking the law: unobtrusively walking into the bank, patiently waiting in the teller's line and everything else he does before pointing a gun at the teller's face and running off with a bag of money.

(New York Times)Tuesday after Speaker Kevin McCarthy granted the Fox News host Tucker Carlson and his staff access to thousands of hours of security footage from Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.

Mr. McCarthy, the newly elected Republican speaker, has been under intense pressure for weeks from his right flank to release the footage, which Mr. Carlson and other promoters of fringe theories allege is being hidden for nefarious reasons.

Federal prosecutors, citing the Capitol Police, have argued that the release of certain footage would reveal security procedures, including camera angles and politicians’ escape routes, that could subject the building to greater risk.

You mean like a Grand Jury Foreman talking about what went on in the Grand Jury? Not only was that dangerous and stupid, it's illegal. But I still think it's cute how you have a complete double standard to your thinking. It's very bi-polar of you.

Curt ~ I don't think this foolish ploy is going to work for them. We have all seen too much live and in real time as it was actually happening.

There are some(even here) who have always been trying to argue that this was basically a peaceful protest, and because a few mischief makers got out of hand and went too far we have been trying to make a big deal out of nothing. Of course that argument falls flat on its face.

We're saying that it's so "cute" you all are bipolar about your hatred.

OD. It is amusing, ain't, OD. Curt, especially, and isle, too, absolutely basked in the Stalinism of those J6 Committee hearings. And, now, Curt, at least, is squirming. And, po pitched a world class hissie over it, too, yesterday.

In addition to the >950 who've been charged for their participation in the insurrection, approximately 351 federal defendants have had their cases adjudicated and received sentences for their criminal activity on January 6, and approximately 192 have been sentenced to periods of incarceration.

It'll be interesting to see how Tucker cherrypicks the 41,000 hours of surveillance camera footage to give his gullible fans the impression that those dastardly Democrats got all upset over nothing and that there was never anything to worry our little heads over.

Actually, though, I don't think Tucker will go through with it. For starters, reviewing 41,000 hours of footage would require at least 50 people watching the footage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 365 days just to get through it. So the cost to benefit ratio doesn't work out in Fox News's favor.

What's curious to me, pt, is that McCarthy came up with this seemingly out of nowhere and I can't guess why. I can only imagine, as I said to po yesterday, McCarthy has discovered a there there.

I hate Tucker's show. If I watch 15 minutes of it in year, it's a lot. And, I don't enjoy it. However, Tucker is a real mover and shaker on Fox Nation where he does, essentially, documentaries. I know you want to tsk tsk but you may be wrong here. We'll see.

I don't know how reliable this is, but I've read that turning the surveillance video over to Fox News was part of an agreement with the holdouts during the vote for House Speaker.

    Ponderer,
    You got it right.

(NY Times)The most conservative Republican members of Congress — many of whom have worked to downplay or deny the reality of the Jan. 6 attack — have been pushing Mr. McCarthy for weeks to release the video after he promised to do so during his campaign for speaker.

Mr. McCarthy has shown little appetite for the kind of aggressive public re-litigation of what happened that day that some of his colleagues have called for, but he is sensitive to the dangers of angering his hard-core base by seeming to drop or disregard the matter.

That is where Mr. Carlson comes in.

“I promised,” Mr. McCarthy said on Wednesday in a brief phone interview in which he defended his decision to grant Mr. Carlson exclusive access to the more than 40,000 hours of security footage. “I was asked in the press about these tapes, and I said they do belong to the American public. I think sunshine lets everybody make their own judgment.”

Rep. Andrew Clyde described rioters in the Capitol on Jan. 6 as looking like a "normal tourist visit".

“There’s a woman in this room whose daughter was murdered on January 6, Ashli Babbitt, and … there’s never been a trial,” Marjory Taylor Greene said.

“I believe that there are many people that came into the Capitol on January 6, whose civil rights and liberties are being violated heavily,” Taylor Greene also said.

The Justice Department, Rep. Paul Gosar said, is “harassing peaceful patriots across the country” as federal prosecutors file charges against hundreds of people who stormed the Capitol and participated in the riot.

Rep. Jody Hice also painted the rioters as the victims, noting that they were four of the people who died, including Babbitt. The other three suffered medical emergencies while part of the crowd laying siege to the Capitol. “It was Trump supporters who lost their lives that day, not Trump supporters who were taking the lives of others,” Hice said.

Curt. I'm not doubting you or that Greene would say that. No, there wasn't a trial, but there was an investigation into the shooting. Obviously, the officer thought it was a wrongful shoot. What the board found was "no fault" to the officer. So the same as other investigations of this type, I'll take their word for it. And they actually articulated some pretty good reasoning for their justification. I could see how it could happen. I'm not happy with the shoot, but given the circumstances, I understand the results. I'm not happy or mad, I just understand it.

Yeah, but, OD. If she'd been black and the officer, white, I'm guessin that BLM and Antifa would not have been as placid as isle's evil, evangelical White Nationalists have been. Ain't?
