Tonight was good TV. I will be eager to see how Nielsen rates it.

HtS likes to claim that the January 6th Committee has only made the case that Trump is an SOB not that he did anything illegal. I disagree.

Tonight showed that Trump's actions were not just a dereliction of duty, which could be simple negligence. Falling asleep at your guard post is dereliction of duty. What Trump did is more akin to Benedict Arnold's active treachery. Trump incited the mob before January 6th and with a tweet sicced the mob on Mike Pence during the insurrection. Trump wasn't simply derelict, he was depraved and a disgrace. When his cult dies off, future generations will rank Trump along side Benedict Arnold, Jefferson Davis and other blights of American history.

    It PROVED nuthin.

BTW, I said that I wouldn't be able to watch it. In the end, I was about to watch a little more than the last half...about two hours.

As I watched, as a citizen of this constitutional republic, I was furious.

Of course, the story about what OrangeMan did and didn't do, most of which informed people already knew, is disturbing. OrangeMan is, truly, an SOB.

I was furious that the fiasco that is the J6 Committee was given air time, in prime time.

What did we see?: Second and third-hand hearsay testimony, first-hand accounts exclusively by people who have come to viciously oppose Trump...answering leading questions no less, intermingled with zeal-packed evangelistic preaching on the evils of Donald Trump by members of the Committee.

Pure Stalin-ism. Fascism at its ugliest.

Yes. The riot was one of the darkest days in American history. As the Committee's presentation made plain, Fox's Sean Hannity and two of Trump's own children...in addition to pb himself...condemned the rioting and wanted Trump to do more to stop it. OrangeMan is an SOB. No doubt. The thing is, if you didn't know that already before last night,...last night, the Committee did nothing to convince you.

After the hearing ended, I was thinking about these TV shows that the Committee is producing. And, I had an aha moment.

You know what these TV shows are? They are third-rate propaganda documentaries.

You TDSers who want to defend last night's fiasco are correct. The Committee's TV shows are not legal proceedings. Rules of evidence don't need to be followed. Due process can freely and easily be set aside...and they are.

But, in this country, where citizens who care about truth and justice observe silly little things like rules of evidence and due process, there's a reason that we don't consider rumor, gossip, hearsay and evangelistic prosecutorial preaching to be a valid path to achieving justice.

Earlier today, I added a thread focused around a POLITICO article noting that GOP leadership ain't standing in the way of Trump's candidacy. The article appeared six hours AFTER the last episode in the J6 fiasco ended.

Beyond the universe of people who hate OrangeMan with a passion, nothing happened last night.

You watched some really snazzy political porn but, by the next morning, POLITICO has already moved on to reporting on the likelihood that Trump will be the GOP 024 nominee.

Last night's hearing was much ado about nuthin.

I hope, if you hate Trump, as you watched your two and a half hour long porn show, the earth moved for you.

But, truly, as the song says, "The thrill is gone."

"At the end of the hearing, Cheney praised the witnesses, especially the women. She offered special thanks to Cassidy Hutchinson, who “knew all along that she would be attacked by President Trump, and by the 50-, 60-, and 70-year-old men who hide behind executive privilege,” but had courage to testify nonetheless. Cheney mentioned the female witnesses by name, saying they were “an inspiration to American women and to American girls.”

Cheney then spoke to Trump supporters, reminding them that the testimony had come from Republicans who supported Trump. She played the recently discovered audio clip of Trump confidant Stephen K. Bannon on October 31, 2020, four days before the election, explaining with laughter that Trump would simply declare victory even if he lost. Cheney explained to supporters that they had been set up.

Flattering them, she said Trump knew he could convince his supporters that the election was stolen because he knew they loved their country and that they would put their lives at stake for it, “preying on their patriotism…on their sense of justice.” “On January 6th, Donald Trump turned their love of country into a weapon against our Capitol and our Constitution.”

Speaking especially to the American women whose votes will be key to the upcoming election, she noted that the room in which they were meeting was where the committee on women’s suffrage met in 1918. We… “have a solemn obligation not to idly squander what so many Americans have fought and died for.”

Cheney noted that the hearings have brought new information. "Doors have opened, new subpoenas have been issued, and the dam has begun to break,” she said. The committee will hold more public hearings in September." *

    Exactly.

I had that on, on my phone, using an earbud, because my wife was asleep.

I tried my derndest not to laugh out loud.

Right on, Heather, Lizzy. OrangeMan is an SOB right down to his core.

Still, the fascists on the Committee haven't gotten close to suggesting a crime Trump'd be convicted of, even after a
    all of their silliness.

And the die hard Trump supporters like Hate cannot say that these hearings and the witnesses are just angry bitter Democrats, virtually all were Republicans that include those closest to Trump, his staff, and even his family ...

"The committee’s witnesses tonight, former deputy national security advisor Matthew Pottinger and former deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, were staunch Trump supporters who found the 2:24 tweet so offensive they resigned that night. The committee has heard almost exclusively from loyal Republicans"*

pb is Charlie Brown, the Committee is Lucy and the prospect of OrangeMan peeking out behind the bars of a federal prison is the football.

With all the hearsay, gossip, rumor, evangelism that'd embarrass Jimmy Swaggart and that stacked deck of hostile witnesses willing to nail OrangeMan to a cross, just how much new and reliably true did anyone whose been following this did we learn last night?

    Little.

What crime that Trump could be convicted of did the Committee reveal?

    Nuthin.

    Period.

Here's your tragedy, isle: pb ain't a Trump supporter.

He is a supporter of justice, though.

Here's a description of what happened last night: Picture Orangie as a person of color. Now, did you notice that all the Committee members and witnesses are wearing white hoods?

    Exactly.

And, you're in the crowd that's egging them on.

    Donna,

Conveniently, the members of the Committee recapped several times. I'm confident that I know enough to assess what was said and done.

My point remains what it has always been. The, uh, hearings are prescipted and canned.

Only the most carefully selected "witnesses" are called. Most of the testimony elicited is hearsay and rumor and gossip. Between the responses of the witnesses the members of the Committee preach, often making points not proven by the testimony that has been given.

Curt's title for this thread mentions what was PROVED. How can anything be proved under these circumstances? What would the eyewitnesses who don't already loathe Trump have added to our base of information? We don't have any idea...and, that's the point...a huuuuuuuuuge point!

While I found out some minutia of what was happening during those 187 minutes, I suspect that no one who posts here learned much of anything.

If you already hate Trump, certainly, the fire of your hate was fanned, but, really?

On J6, while I was watching the riot, I thought this was the most horrible and tragic event to take place in my lifetime, except for 9/11 and Kennedy’s assassination.

But, proved? All that was proved to me is the members of the Committee hate Trump so shamelessly that it's reasonable to think that they've lost sense.

    You, too, no doubt.

    YOU are prescripted and canned.

" How can anything be proved under these circumstances?" --HtS

I understood that you and others of your political persuasion concluded from watching the hearings that it was proven that Cassidy Hutchinson perjured herself.

  13. by HatetheSwamp on July 22, 2022 9:57 am

    YOU are prescripted and canned.

I'm taking it that, based on you admiration of the J6 Committee, that's high praise.

    C'mon Jack. Read the polls!

I understood that you and others of your political persuasion concluded from watching the hearings that it was proven that Cassidy Hutchinson perjured herself.

I'd love for you to try to find me saying that in one of my posts.

What I've done is laugh, kneeslappingly, that before the sun set on her testimony Secret Service agents, according to NBC and ABC, were demanding the opportunity to refute her under oath...

...and that nearly all of her testimony was hearsay and rumor and gossip.

  15. by HatetheSwamp on July 22, 2022 10:46 am

I think this says it pretty darn well.

Jonathan Turley: What was particularly bizarre was Cheney’s dismissal the need for any opposing views in the hearings. Cheney said that such balance would not have made a difference because the witnesses would not have been forced to change their testimony.

No one is suggesting that someone like Bill Barr would have changed his testimony. Rather, the argument is that there were questions not being asked for the witnesses as well as evidence not being presented.

As if to fulfill the criticism of a show trial, Cheney ended the hearing this week by calling for more officials to come forward and noting that Trump family members and former officials have already come forward with their own public “confessions.”

...These hearings could be so much more but that requires politicians to do something that they are almost genetically resistant to: yielding time to opponents. It is the difference between creating a case for the next election as opposed to creating a record for history.
