Congratulations America on overturning Roe vs Wade.

From what I understand this law was preventing states from implementing any sort of restrictions on abortion.

Of course this is only the beginning of the battle. Fornication Culture is deeply embedded in the West generally, but especially in the American establishment. Still I'm glad to see this small glimmer of hope.

    g,

Thanks for chiming in. It will be interesting to get the perspective from someone who's not American.

The US has a "federal government," i.e., a central government, in Washington DC, then each of its 50 states have their own governments.

The Federal Constitution, immediately after it was ratified, was amended with a Bill of Rights that protects citizens, and the individual states, from intrusion by the Federal government.

    The Tenth Amendment states,

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

In 1973, the US Supreme Court declared that the Federal Constitution created a woman's right to abortion. The legitimacy of that ruling itself has always been controversial.

But, in the end, last week, the Supreme Court reversed itself and declared that the regulation of abortion must be a matter to be settled by the people and their elected representatives, i.e., it is a state issue.

It didn't declare abortion illegal. It simply acknowledged that it's not for the Federal government to regulate.

    Well done Lead,
The issue, which was brought up earlier, is that both sides far groups are saying that it finished abortion once and for all. It simply didn't. Those "assuming" we're a European Socialism don't understand we chose to recognize that Maine has a different culture than Texas, or Virginia.

I do acknowledge that I'm not a personal fan of some of the abortion laws on both sides. NONE of them have made body harvesting illegal. Some allow for late term abortions. Will any state outlaw abortions? I doubt it. My bet is the "heartbeat law" will be the most restrictive any state will go to. With the morning after pill, it makes it easier, and faster. Most of the time without seeing a doctor. Especially in the case of rape it might be a good option.

My daughter in law was talking about abortions in Russia. Federal law states "4 weeks from conception." I think that's a pretty quick turnaround. Heartbeat? maybe.

The "what if" game is just stupid. What if pigs could fly and we had unicorns?

"From what I understand this law was preventing states from implementing any sort of restrictions on abortion"

You are mistaken about that George. It's what Roe's opponents wanted people to believe.

Here is what it really says:

    3. State criminal abortion laws, like those involved here, that except from criminality only a life-saving procedure on the mother's behalf without regard to the stage of her pregnancy and other interests involved violate the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which protects against state action the right to privacy, including a woman's qualified right to terminate her pregnancy. Though the State cannot override that right, it has legitimate interests in protecting both the pregnant woman's health and the potentiality of human life, each of which interests grows and reaches a "compelling" point at various stages of the woman's approach to term. Pp. 147-164.

    (a) For the stage prior to approximately the end of the first trimester, the abortion decision and its effectuation must be left to the medical judgment of the pregnant woman's attending physician. Pp. 163, 164.

    (b) For the stage subsequent to approximately the end of the first trimester, the State, in promoting its interest in the health of the mother, may, if it chooses, regulate the abortion procedure in ways that are reasonably related to maternal health. Pp. 163, 164.

    (c) For the stage subsequent to viability the State, in promoting its interest in the potentiality of human life, may, if it chooses, regulate, and even proscribe, abortion except where necessary, in appropriate medical judgment, for the preservation of the life or health of the mother. Pp. 163-164; 164-165.

    Thanks Islander. Good to know.

Still America had excessively permissive abortion laws, even compared to the rest of the Western world. Very barbaric stuff. See image linked.

  5. by Ponderer on June 27, 2022 6:50 pm

Yeah, georges. We Americans get pretty intense into the whole "basic human rights" subject. It's kinda our thing. America and all it supposedly stands for don't you know.

  6. by georges on June 27, 2022 6:57 pm
Yeah Ponderer, the whole world knows how America feels about human rights. The Middle East thanks you.

I'm curious, georges. Could you describe for me who you think these women are who are getting abortions up to near full term in their pregnancies? You say it's pretty barbaric stuff. Could you describe for us a picture of the women who you see as being barbaric enough to casually undergo such an operation so late in a pregnancy?

Who are these women? These women who the "Pro Life" advocates in this country are dedicated to painting a picture of. These women who supposedly are walking into clinics in droves and having abortions at eight and a half months.

Please describe for me these women that they must have elaborately painted in your mind by now.

I'm not looking for a long discussion here or anything like that. I just want to hear what they have put into your head.

Perhaps you can start by explaining why America needs partial birth abortions, something permitted virtually nowhere outside of China and America.

  9. by Ponderer on June 27, 2022 7:11 pm

In all candor, I did say "supposedly". You won't be getting any blanket support for the way this country has dealt with it's global neighbors. We've been downright assholes quite often.

Especially to the Palestinians. What we have facilitated Israel in doing to them over many decades will live in history as one of the most dastardly things done to an entire nation's worth of people by another country. Although lately, Russia may have usurped that position from us. Fukker blew up a packed shopping mall today.

  10. by Ponderer on June 27, 2022 7:13 pm

Yeah. Figured as much. But I'm an optimist, so I'll try again..........

America and Russia are mirror images of each other in many ways. (And my own country is not any better).

  12. by Ponderer on June 27, 2022 7:37 pm

So you won't answer my initial question. As I said, I am not looking for a long conversation here. Which is already what my asking a simple question tends to bring about in this crazy house. Without ever getting the the answer I might add.

You won't answer the question and we'll just leave it at that. So we're done here.

    Thanks.

  13. by georges on June 27, 2022 7:51 pm
You could have just answered my question if you wanted an answer. Are you really surprised that I'm not interested in answering a dishonest question?

  14. by Ponderer on June 27, 2022 9:07 pm

Yeah, No. That's not gonna work on me anymore. Valiant effort though.

See, the funny thing is that I know you won't answer the question I asked you in my opening post to you. Like... ever. Even though I am now giving you the answer to the question you asked me that you only used to obfuscate your refusal to answer mine.

Here's your answer: (consider this one a freebee...)

"Perhaps you can start by explaining why America needs partial birth abortions" -georges

What you call "partial birth abortions" consist of about .02% of all abortions performed in this country. We're talking a little over 2,000 in a year.

"And contrary to the claims of some abortion opponents, most such abortions do not take place in the third trimester of pregnancy, or after fetal "viability." Indeed, when some members of Congress tried to amend the bill to ban only those procedures that take place after viability, abortion opponents complained that would leave most of the procedures legal." -(see link)

So it appears that abortion opponents themselves didn't even want it made illegal. But the thing is, these types of abortions only ever take place to save the life of the mother during a potentially lethal complication of a pregnancy. They are only performed when medically necessary.

And the whole argument about pregnancies after the second trimester is moot anyways since abortions in the third trimester are essentially unheard of. The word myth springs to mind. Propaganda springs to mind quickly thereafter. The link I included goes into more detail about it if you care to broaden your perspective.

So your answer is that they are very rare and they are needed because they are medically necessary.

See, this is why I wanted to get some idea from you of the image the "pro-life" propagandists have constructed in your head of the women they want you to think are busting down doors of abortion clinics to get abortions 36 weeks into their pregnancies.

And wow! Talk about timing! I just answered your question, so here's the perfect opportunity for you to answer mine! (Not that you actually will). You're new here, so I don't mind giving you an extra last chance.

So don't go on to another topic. Don't obfuscate and distract. Don't use anything I just said to start another discussion. Simply answer my question and we can go on from there (or not). Show how fair and honest a person you are.

I hope you surprise me...! 🤞
