President Biden told US troops in Poland Friday that they will witness the bravery of Ukrainians fighting off Russia’s invasion “when you’re there” — making a significant gaffe after he previously said the US must stay out of the European conflict to avoid triggering “World War III.”

Biden made the remark while addressing members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division after lunching on pizza and posing for selfies with dozens of paratroopers at a mess hall in Rzeszow, southeastern Poland.

“You’re going to see when you’re there, and some of you have been there, you’re gonna see — you’re gonna see women, young people standing in the middle in front of a damned tank just saying, ‘I’m not leaving, I’m holding my ground,’” Biden said.

A White House official quickly clarified that Biden wasn’t changing his stance on deploying the military into Ukraine.

According to The Associated Press, Biden's remarks were given in front of U.S. troops who "had been sent near Poland’s border [with Ukraine] to assist with the humanitarian emergency and to bolster the U.S. military presence on the eastern flank of NATO." The words, "and you're gonna see when you're there," were spoken right after the president mentioned the bravery of Ukrainian citizens. Here is what he said: "But the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian people have a lot of backbone. They have a lot of guts. And I’m sure you’re observing it. And I don’t mean just the military, which is, we’ve been training since back when they uh, Russia moved into, into southeast, southeast Ukraine. But also the average citizen. Look at how they’re stepping up. Look at how they’re stepping up. And you’re gonna see when you’re there. And some of you have been there. You’re gonna see, you’re gonna see women, young people, standing, standing in the middle of, in front of a damn tank, just saying, “I’m not leaving. I’m holding my ground." Biden said "you’re gonna see when you’re there. And some of you have been there." Obviously the "some of you have been there" were not there fighting as US soldiers. Likewise, the others who haven't been there will witness the Ukrainian resistance, "guts" and "backbone" that Biden lauded. Being in Ukraine doesn't necessarily mean a US combat mission. Why do you suppose that is? It's because, at more than Fox, people were questioning the meaning of what he said. The answer? He didn't mean nuthin. The answer is no. Why then does being in Ukraine mean a person can be there only for purposes of combat? These are US soldiers on a NATO mission or at the least cooperating with NATO. If the "there" that Biden referred to were some other country in Europe, would you assume he meant American soldiers would be there on a combat mission? I don't disagree that it's good diplomatically to clarify that Biden did not mean US soldiers are going to war. The article below discloses that US National Guard personnel were recently called back from training missions inside Ukraine. I wasn't aware that the US sent soldiers on training missions in Ukraine.
