Prussia's General Staff was the key tool for the Armies of Reaction in defeating Napoleon Bonaparte from 1814 to 1815. It survived until the fall of the Third Reich in 1945. Its chiefs ranged from the quiet and scholarly to the vivid and fiery. As Heinz Guderian wrote, "The General Staff Corps selected those officers with the finest minds and characters and educate them so they could lead the German armed forces in any circumstances no matter how difficult."
