BULLSHIT

Elvis did not sell 1 billion records, it was just something his record company and his management cooked up to improve his image.

Honestly, besides American and some part of Europe, the rest of the world doesn't give a @#$%& about Elvis. Presley never united anyone through his music. Anyone who says otherwise are DELUSIONAL.

Michael Jackson was a universal icon, something Elvis will never be.

..and anyone who too pre-occupied determining which people identify themselves as which and why they're doing it is sadder than a lady who claims to be a white woman who likes Michael Jackson. Get it out of your anal cavity because you reek of stupidity

Lol! WTF?! You MJ freaks are really creepy. Now stop your crying over spilt mike, go away and try to get a life!
Too few people have any concept of the greatest entertainer of ALL TIME! That goes back a long way. For instance, study carefully what Al Jolson did in the first half of the 20th century. How in the days of much less in the way of mass communication, he could hold an audience in the palm of his hand. And his contributions to movies, stage, music review, taking Broadway on the road, recording, radio, USO, etc. were enormous. People just have too short memories, or they study/know too little to understand what went on before their memories were born.

So when the next celebrity dies of an overdose and we bring this thread back up who will everyone be calling the greatest entertainer then?

Mike is right. MJ fans have short memories. Bing Cosby is argubly the greatest. If you want to go by number hits it's Bing Crosby. A whopping 41 number one hits! That's leaves poor MJ dead in the water ( pardon the pun). "White Christmas" sold over 100 million copies.the best-selling single and best-selling song of all time. According to the International Motion Picture Almanac, Crosby tied for second on the "All Time Number One Stars List" with Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, and Burt Reynolds. Sure beat Jacko in the respect.

For 15 years (1934, 1937, 1940, 1943-1954), Crosby was among the top 10 in box office draw, and for five of those years (1944-49) he was the largest in the world. He sang four Academy Award-winning songs – "Sweet Leilani" (1937), "White Christmas" (1942), "Swinging on a Star" (1944), "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" (1951) – and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Going My Way (1944).
[en.wikipedia.org]

He had 23 gold and platinum records. Quadruple that of MJ.

MJ doesn't even come close to Big Bing.

Yeah, it depends on what the criteria is for "greatest" and for "entertainer", doesn't it? Personally, Johnny Depp is MY greatest entertainer for various reasons I will keep to myself...hot smiley winking smiley

as far as pure talent and captivation in the music world....he is the greatest...threw his innovative music...his ground breaking music videos..and the stories behind them...his choregraphies....his live tours....he was one of a few that we could really say was larger than life..but its true that greatest entertainer can mean a lot of things in different ways...and if we were to make a decent list of people who entertained us as much it would be

sports
the jordan's
the bryant's
the magic johnson's....
the gretzky's
the patrick roy's
the Tyson's
Muhammad Ali
etc...

then it would be the important figures like...
charlie chaplin..
frank sinatra..
fred astaire..
john wayne..
elvis presley...
rolling stones...
the beatles...
the eagles....
the beegees...
threw the backstreet boys..n sink.etcc...
but even they cant be compared to michael jackson...
other great entertainers that we cant forget are people like evil knievle dare devils are great entertainers...musicians....criss angel..coperfield....acotrs...cant forget the stallones..the schwarzennegers...people who made their name remembered people who really gave they all in order to make a great show for fans...a few wrestlers could enter that list as well..wrestling is one of the greatest form of entertainment in the world...great sports legends like Muhammad Ali is to my eyes one of the greatest entertainers of all time...people who made their name remembered people who really gave they all in order to make a great show for fans...but if we were to shortened that list to 3...Michael Jackson would be in that list !!!!!
Al Jolson spanned 5 decades and some his music is still around better then ever for it's enhanced like todays singers. We also can understand this music.
Entertainment is more on the lines of show business. The likes of Rock and Roll back in the 1950's made what it is today. Then we can even turn the clock back further. Like what is talent to many copy cats today and hard to beat the originals. I like all music and especially the music that makes sense. It is hard to say whom is the best for what some can do others can't and visa, versa. Last yes Michael Jackson was good though look back Jackie Wilson did the moon walk though they didn't call it that. Also Michael was also one of the weirdess lets face facts. If a no name wasn't charged for child molestation and he lived on your street there would always be that thought in the back of your mind and you wouldn't want him there and that's how people are. Because it's Michael that's okay. In all doesn't matter any more how he was in life.
Yes and todays world with the media and tv news is around the world in seconds. Not weeks or months. Comparing who was the greatest is like comparing apples to oranges. Then if it wasn't for the rock and roll of the 50's Michael may not have even excisted. Then we can turn the clock back to many era's where it all started. Just think if the telephone was never invented. One thing everyone does no Michael was weird and last he is equal now.

I am not a fan of Michael Jackson, but seems to me he's the best candidate for the title of greatest entertainer of all time. Maybe there were greater greats before his time, but they didn't have the advantage of the kind of publicity modern media can bring a celebrity. Michael Jackson is a household name in India, but none of the other candidates mentioned on this thread are that well known here. You need to measure his status universally, not from just American point of view.
