Sam,

"May I ask you: What evidence would be convincing to YOU that huge disc shaped flying craft that perform fantastical feats in the sky exist?"

I find it so easy to brush the phenomena aside because it has such strong parallels to other obviously BS paranormal phenomena, like religion, ESP, etc.

—— It supposedly is a wide-spread phenomena — sooooo many people have seen it — yet compelling evidence remains elusive. Just like God, UFOs conveniently remain hidden to our everyday experience. Sightings often conveniently happen when few people are around, or in restricted areas like Area 51, or in restricted circumstances, where people can't talk about it because the it's classified by the military.

—— Just like religion, boatloads of claims about the UFO phenomena have been thoroughly debunked.

—— Just like religion, UFO Believers have contrived explanations for every line of questioning about the phenomena. No rise in digital photography of the phenomena since the advent of camera phones?.... the UFO's shut down electronic equipment in the vicinity!

—— Just like religion, believers pick and choose when ignorance is applicable. "Why do the UFO's fly around our missile bases? It must be that they are warning us about nuclear catastrophe! Why is it that the craft can seemingly break the laws of physics as we currently know them? Our current understanding of physics is inapplicable!"

(Sound familiar, Christians? "Aunt Sophie's cancer is in remission? God answered our prayers! Uncle Theo's cancer is getting worse? God works in mysterious ways, it's not for us to know his plan.")

—— The UFO phenomena has the same air of "exclusivity" as other paranormal phenomena. Like most cults, believers seem to delight in the fact that they possess knowledge of which the masses remain ignorant.

(Yeah, I know I mixed in "alien visitation" in that list.)

So, Sam, a start to answering your question would be: It would bring me closer to belief if the items on the above list eased up. If UFO sightings became more of an everyday occurance. If more legitimate sources attested to them. If believers came up with more plausible explanations. But I suppose your question, Sam, is what single event would convince me. I think most any rational person would be convinced if such a craft landed on the White House lawn and when CNN arrived it leapt up into the air to demonstrate it's capabilities, and millions of people were there to witness it. Conversely, most any rational person would remain unconvinced if the only evidence were one guy in Montana who saw a bright light in the sky. So the question is, where on the "spectrum of evidence" does any person sit? How little evidence would it take to convince a person? How little evidence can be presented to a person to make them say, "I now believe in a phenomena which the majority of the world remains unaware, and of which the majority of the scientific community rejects or remains unconvinced?" That's a hard question to answer.

A first hand experience would make a believer out of me. A large object hovering above me, clearly visible (not just lights in the sky) and then zipping away. Like Dick said, I'd pinch myself a few times after it happened. I'd ask, "Are there any circumstances in my life that would cause me to hallucinate to that extent?" I'd subject my experience to the sharp-minded critical thinkers in my circles of family and friends. Maybe even visit a doctor to make damn sure. We are, after all, talking about a game-changing experience, here. (That's something that strikes me as weird about some UFO believers ... how blithely they seem to accept the phenomena. It seems to echo religious conditioning. "Our government has technology which blows away anything understood by science? We're being visited by aliens from another world? Golly gee, that's neat-o! Oops, have to stop reading about this phenomena that is a turning point in human history ... The Sopranos re-run marathon is starting." )

A second-hand experience would go a long way too. A recent experience, related to me by someone that I knew well, and trusted as objective.

A single event over a populated area, witnessed and camera-phoned by a large number of people from many different angles. Not a pattern of bright lights that could be anything — I mean a large object hovering in plain view and then zipping off.

I don't know what else. Just as PTTP feels like any "evidence" she submits will be readily dismissed, I feel like any criteria I demand would be readily dismissed by believers as being too stringent. "Of course UFO's won't allow themselves to be filmed by CNN ... it's a super-secret government program about super-secret craft that has to be kept super-secret!"

Having said all this, I'm not entirely dismissing the phenomena out of hand. I've stated before that I think it's something worth looking into. Whether it's real or psychological, I don't know. I just think that if flying craft like that were as common as believers would have you think, it would be commonly understood as real. Instead, it lurks in the shadows with religion, ghost-hunting, and cryptids. I think it will fade as the next generations grow up with cameras saturating our society.

Events of July 19–20

At 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 1952, Edward Nugent, an air traffic controller at Washington National Airport (today Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport), spotted seven objects on his radar. The objects were located 15 miles (24 km) south-southwest of the city; no known aircraft were in the area and the objects were not following any established flight paths. Nugent's superior, Harry Barnes, a senior air-traffic controller at the airport, watched the objects on Nugent's radarscope. He later wrote:

"We knew immediately that a very strange situation existed . . . their movements were completely radical compared to those of ordinary aircraft."[1]

Barnes had two controllers check Nugent's radar; they found that it was working normally. Barnes then called National Airport's other radar center; the controller there, Howard Cocklin, told Barnes that he also had the objects on his radarscope. Furthermore, Cocklin said that by looking out of the control tower window he could see one of the objects:

"a bright orange light. I can't tell what's behind it."[2]

At this point, other objects appeared in all sectors of the radarscope; when they moved over the White House and the United States Capitol, Barnes called Andrews Air Force Base, located 10 miles from National Airport. Although Andrews reported that they had no unusual objects on their radar, an airman soon called the base's control tower to report the sighting of a strange object. Airman William Brady, who was in the tower, then saw an "object which appeared to be like an orange ball of fire, trailing a tail . . . [it was] unlike anything I had ever seen before." As Brady tried to alert the other personnel in the tower, the strange object "took off at an unbelievable speed."

Meanwhile, another person in the National Airport control tower reported seeing "an orange disk about 3,000 feet altitude." On one of the airport's runways, S.C. Pierman, a Capital Airlines pilot, was waiting in the cockpit of his DC-4 for permission to take off. After spotting what he believed to be a meteor, he was told that the control tower's radar had picked up unknown objects closing in on his position. Pierman observed six objects — "white, tailless, fast-moving lights" — over a 14-minute period.[3] Pierman was in radio contact with Barnes during his sighting, and Barnes later related that "each sighting coincided with a pip we could see near his plane. When he reported that the light streaked off at a high speed, it disappeared on our scope."

At Andrews AFB, meanwhile, the control tower personnel were tracking on radar what some thought to be unknown objects, but others suspected, and in one instance were able to prove, were simply stars and meteors. However, Staff Sgt. Charles Davenport observed an orange-red light to the south; the light "would appear to stand still, then make an abrupt change in direction and altitude . . . this happened several times."[4] At one point both radar centers at National Airport and the radar at Andrews AFB were tracking an object hovering over a radio beacon. The object vanished in all three radar centers at the same time.[5] At 3 a.m., shortly before two jet fighters from Newcastle AFB in Delaware arrived over Washington, all of the objects vanished from the radar at National Airport. However, when the jets ran low on fuel and left, the objects returned, which convinced Barnes that "the UFOs were monitoring radio traffic and behaving accordingly." [6] The objects were last detected by radar at 5:30 a.m. Around sunrise, E.W. Chambers, a civilian radio engineer in Washington's suburbs, observed "five huge disks circling in a loose formation. They tilted upward and left on a steep ascent."

Events of July 26–27

At 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 1952, a pilot and stewardess on a National Airlines flight into Washington observed some strange objects above their plane. Within minutes, both radar centers at National Airport, and the radar at Andrews AFB, were tracking more unknown objects. A master sergeant at Andrews visually observed the objects; he later said that "these lights did not have the characteristics of shooting stars. There was [sic] no trails . . . they traveled faster than any shooting star I have ever seen." [11]

Meanwhile, Albert M. Chop, the press spokesman for Project Blue Book, arrived at National Airport and refused several reporters' requests to photograph the radar screens. He then joined the radar center personnel.[12] By this time (9:30 p.m.) the radar center was picking up unknown objects in every sector. At times the objects traveled slowly; at other times they reversed direction and moved across the radarscope at speeds calculated at 7,000 mph. At 11:30 p.m., two jet fighters from Newcastle AFB in Delaware arrived over Washington. Capt. John McHugo, the flight leader, was vectored towards the radar blips but saw nothing, despite repeated attempts.[13] However, his wingman, Lt. William Patterson, did see four white "glows" and chased them. Suddenly, the "glows" turned and surrounded his fighter. Patterson asked the control tower at National Airport what he should do; according to Chop, the tower's answer was "stunned silence". The four objects then sped away from Patterson's jet and disappeared.[14]

After midnight on July 27, Major Dewey Fournet, Project Blue Book's liaison at the Pentagon, and Lt. John Holcomb, a US Navy radar specialist, arrived at the radar center at National Airport.[15] During the night, Lt. Holcomb received a call from the Washington National Weather Station. They told him that a slight temperature inversion was present over the city, but Holcomb felt that the inversion was not "nearly strong enough to explain the 'good and solid' returns" on the radarscopes.[16] Fournet relayed that all those present in the radar room were convinced that the targets were most likely caused by solid metallic objects. There had been weather targets on the scope too, he said, but this was a common occurrence and the controllers "were paying no attention to them."[17] Two more jets from Newcastle AFB were scrambled during the night. One pilot saw nothing unusual; the other pilot moved towards a white light which "vanished" when he closed in. A Capital Airlines flight leaving Washington spotted "odd lights" which remained visible for about twelve minutes.[18] As on July 20, the sightings and unknown radar returns ended at sunrise.

Allegedly the "real" story is this event was first contact for us. We had witnessed a few things (UFO sightings), we found the crashed ship at Roswell and the greys decided to contact us. The DC incident was when they came and purposely made their presence known to us. The powers that be met with them and made a pact - they could visit and study us however they wanted - but it was decided all their activities had to remain clandestine. For whatever reason, we didn't want to acknowledge contact publicly (by "we" I mean a chosen few principles in our government). It was around that time that Area 51 was established and allegedly we were given certain technology in exchange for our cooperation as well. The X-Files back story is based - loosely - on the alleged "real" story of our interaction with the greys.

I'm familiar with that theory, but I'm skeptical.

That's why I threw in a lot of "allegedly"s. But it does coincide with a lot of benchmark events - Roswell, MJ12, Area 51... The deeper you get - the crazier it sounds. But there's the old adage too - the bigger your scam - the bolder you have to be (paraphrasing - I can't remember the exact wording).

The Bush Crime Family motto, imho.

51843 2013-10-26 2013-10-25 {dr}Looked up from back yard and saw bright planetary sized circle that did not move and faded out rapidly in less than 1 minute. Katy TX, US

I had just gone out into the back yard to feed the dogs. It was crisp and totally clear sky with excellent visibility. I looked up and saw a planetary sized light to the northwest at about 80 degrees from the horizon. It caught my eye because it was bright and I had never seen a star or planet in that position at that time. I looked closely at it and it was white and starlike and perfectly circular. In something less than a minute of observation, it faded out - not twinkling out like a star and other stars that were less visible were still plainly visible in the brightening sky. It faded out quickly - just disappeared.

I looked for it for another minute or so and it did not reappear. It was stationary and should have still been visible in some form.

I have seen iridium flares and know it was not this. There was no change in light intensity.

This is like the metallic ball-like object I saw pass by my plane about five years ago.

51848 2013-10-26 2013-10-26 {dr}silver ball that went from east to west with no sound Jackson MI, US

I was sitting in my living room watching tv, we have triple pane patio doors. A very shiny silver "ball" came into my view when i was just looking out the doors. I jumped up and ran to the door and went out on our patio. I watch it go from the east to the west, it dropped down then went right. There was no sound. It disappeared into a very dark cloud. The first thought was what the heck was that. The way it reflected light was weird because the sun wasnt out at the moment.

Last week I read another report of a smooth silvery spherical object that darted across the sky.

“Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe that unknown flying objects are nonsense.” - Former CIA Director, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, public statement, 1960

“These UFOs are interplanetary devices systematically observing the Earth, either manned or under remote control, or both.” "Information on UFOs, including sighting reports, has been and is still being officially withheld.” - Colonel Joseph J. Bryan III, founder member of the CIAs psychological warfare staff, advisor to NATO

“More than 10,000 sightings have been reported, the majority of which cannot be accounted for by any ‘scientific’ explanation, eg that they are hallucinations, the effects of light refraction, meteors, wheels falling from aeroplanes, and the like…. They have been tracked on radar screens… and the observed speeds have been as great as 9,000 mph. I am convinced that these objects do exist and they are not manufactured by any nation on earth. I can therefore see no alternative to accepting the theory that they come from an extraterrestrial source.” - Air Chief Marshall Lord Dowding, Commanding Officer of the RAF during WWII

“A saucer flew right over (us), put down three landing gears, and landed out on the dry lakebed. (The cameramen) went out there with their cameras toward the UFO…. I had chance to hold (the film) up to the window. Good close-up shots. There was no doubt in my mind that it was made someplace other than on this earth.” - Colonel Gordon Cooper, Mercury and Gemini Astronaut describing an incident he witnessed during the 1960’s during a videotaped interview for the Disclosure Program

“The UFO was bouncing around the 747. (It) was a huge ball with lights running around it… Well, I’ve been involved in a lot of cover-ups with the FAA. When we gave the presentation to the Reagan staff, they had all those people swear that this never happened. But they never had me swear it never happened. I can tell you what I’ve seen with my own eyes. I’ve got a videotape. I’ve got the voice tape. I’ve got the reports that were filed that will confirm what I’ve been telling you.” - John Callaghan, FAA Chief of Accidents and Investigations during a videotaped interview for the Disclosure program

“I have frequently been asked why a person of my background—a former Chief of the Defence Staff, a former Chairman of the NATO Military Committee—why I think there is a cover-up (of) the facts about UFOs. I believe governments fear that if they did disclose those facts, people would panic. I don’t believe that at all. There is a serious possibility that we are being visited by people from outer space. It behoves us to find out who they are, where they come from, and what they want.” - Admiral Lord Hill-Norton, British Royal Navy, former Chief of Defence during a videotaped interview for the Disclosure program

The security guard called and said, “Sir, there’s a glowing red object hovering right outside the front gate. I’ve got all the men out here with their weapons drawn.” We lost between 16-18 ICBMs (nuclear tipped Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles) at the same time UFOs were in the area… (A high ranking Air Force officer) said, “Stop the investigation; do no more on this and do not write a final report. I heard that many of the guards that reported the incident were sent off to Vietnam." - Captain Robert Salas, USAF, during a videotaped interview for the Disclosure program

“The phenomenon of UFOs is real. I know that there are scientific organisations which study the problem.” - Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev on 26th April 1990

“This is the first sighting in Zimbabwe where airborne pilots have tried to intercept a UFO. As far as my Air Staff is concerned, we believe implicitly that the unexplained UFOs are from civilizations beyond our planet.” - Air Commodore David Thorne, Director of General Operations for the Zimbabwe Air Force in 1985

"It is impossible for any man-made machine to make a sudden appearance in front of a jumbo jet that is flying 910 kilometers per hour and to remain in steady formation paralleling our aircraft. ... Honestly, we were simply breathtaken." - Kenju Terauchi Japan Airlines pilot in 1986

“Reliable reports indicate there are objects coming into our atmosphere at very high speeds and controlled by thinking intelligences.” - Navy Admiral Delmar Fahrney in a public statement during 1957

Shape: Sphere
Duration:10 minutes
I was driving in Carson Street, Torrance, California, around 5PM, sky was bright and clear.

I noticed up ahead a bright two spheres flying, at first I thought airplanes but they were tiny comparing to a plane size. Looking directly at them I saw the bright light spheres to be what seemed to be shiny silver spheres. It wasn't real large [huge] but wasn't tiny either.

I grabbed my cell phone and turn the camera on when I looked again they disappeared.

Long Description of Sighting Report

We were leaving the house when we saw a bright light over the trees. At first we thought a plane crashed but there was no sound or fire. Then there was these bright orange orbs that ascended into the sky an traveled in controlled flight about 400 to 500 ft. above the trees. There had to be about at least 100 orange orbs in flight. There was no noise produced by these objects. The experience was quite unnerving. We did capture on video. (5 witnesses)

Transcript:

Dr. David Jacobs has been researching UFOs and UFO abductees for over 38 years. He has published his findings in three books, and teaches the only regular curriculum university course on UFOs in the United States. In the following interview, Dr. Jacobs shares his findings, as well as his theories about the overall goal of these abductions.

DAVID JACOBS: There’s never been a phenomenon like this. This is completely unprecedented. Everything that happens onboard is for a reason. Everything is logical. Everything is rational. And everything is understandable with enough information. This was no learning experience. This wasn’t an experiment. They weren’t trying to figure out what makes us tick. The evidence suggested that this was a program. There was a reason for this program to be put in place. That’s what the evidence clearly points to.

What was happening was that people were talking about this reproductive material. People were having sperm taken; they were having eggs taken. People report that they were having embryos injected into them and sometimes retrieved from them.

CARMEN (abductee): What we conclude is that maybe these people are creating hybrids - creating a special race of people with DNA from us – human DNA , and with the alien DNA, creating people that are I guess more intelligent, more sophisticated. And then we heard other people telling these stories, alluding to that effect.

JACOBS: I began to hear accounts that abductees were taken to a room, and their attention was redirected to a screen-like device. And on the screen there would be a scene of normal human activity – a picnic; kids playing ball; guys standing around a grill; people talking to each other. And they’ll hear in their minds “Can you tell the difference between you and us?” And the person will look at the screen and say “Huh? Uh, no. Everybody looks the same to me, you know.” And they’ll say “See? Isn’t that wonderful? Isn’t that great? Someday we’ll all be together. Soon it will be wonderful. Soon everybody will be happy.”

Now you hear that once – it’s not a pattern. You hear that once, you just discard it. Interesting, but who knows? But when you begin to hear it over and over again, then suddenly it has different meaning. This is from other people who are not aware of this testimony. Then I began to have a series of very bizarre accounts, but once again fitting patterns that people were saying they know that in the future they have a job to do with other abductees, and the job is to stand on the corner, and when panicked people come by, to tell them “It’s okay. Everything is alright. Just keep moving – just keep moving this way.” And they would practice that, and they would sort of do that, and they knew that in the future, this is what they would have to do. And then I began to understand that what they were telling these abductees – what these beings were telling these abductees, is that ultimately this is an integration program into the society, not with Grey aliens most likely, but with these hybrids who look quite human.

For years and years and years, people would write to me and say “Are adult hybrids walking among us?” and the answer is absolutely not. There’s no evidence whatsoever that that’s the case. But the evidence that I’ve been getting recently in terms of the goals of the program is that might be the case – I don’t really know yet, but it’s possible. And I am embarrassed even to say that. I’m embarrassed. And yet it fits the pattern of all the evidence that I’ve been hearing for the past twenty years. It’s focused on hybrids - the reproduction is to produce hybrids, and it does appear to be an integration program, as crazy as that may sound.

This is a technologically superior society by definition that we are seeing, and everything that is described is technologically superior. That is not the problem. The problem is that it’s neurologically superior as well. They can control us neurologically, and they can do it from a distance. That makes them superior. And the question is how do you stop a superior species from integrating – from doing what they want to do? I don’t know the answer to that. If it was a matter of shooting bullets at them, it’d be no problem. But the problems are much more difficult than you could ever imagine, and this will never be accepted as a reality until it is real. And then it’s too late. I am very, very not optimistic , shall we say, about the future of this. I fear for the future of my children – and both of them are in their twenties now – and I just think that they’re not going to have a future the way they think that they are and the way that I had hoped that they would. I am very pessimistic about it and I fear for the future.
