But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you're a part, and so am I, and they want to bring in millions of foreign nationals to basically break down the structure that we have. In that regard, Pat Buchanan is right. So I say you've got to cap with a number. - Bill O'Reilly thumbs up

Hank/Gordo,

What the atheists do with the miracles of Jesus is to slough them off as myths. It's an easy thing to do. The Gospels, which contain these miracles stories, are easily argued to be second and third hand accounts of Jesus or, perhaps, even more distant than that. They were written many years, even generations after the end of the so-called life of Jesus, whom for all we know may be a mythical figure who never really lived at all.

What atheists can't explain is the miracles that the early believers did in the name of Jesus.

The best information we have about the early Christian community is not from the Book of Acts which was written by the author of the Gospel of Luke and which acknowledges that it is not a first hand account (see Luke 1:1-4). No, the best information about the early Christian community is found in the letters of Paul. Many of them are acknowledged to be authentic even by the most skeptical, unbelieving scholars. They are the earliest Christian documents extant and they are letters, written by a leader in the early Christian community to other flesh and blood Christians in the first and second century of the movement.

What atheists can't do is dismiss the mention of miracles as common events in the early Christian community--events that all of the people who know Paul have witnesses for themselves--real events that they all were witness to and not encouraging tales of a distant and mythical savior whom neither they nor even Paul had seen face to face. Those miracles were, of course, evidence sufficient to believe that the miracle stories told about Jesus were also true.

Look em up. Paul's letters are peppered with reference to the miracles all believers knew to be part and parcel of their lives in Christ.

Your buddy,

bill

I suspected Jun or Islander, actually. I refuse to believe Henry has a sense of humour.

“Forget the war between the sexes. If being equal means we have fight and have the 50% chance of divorce for every marriage we have, forget it. Let's respect each other for what we are and try to get along with more respect. "Equality" might be an illusory goal, since we've each got different equipment, inside and out, but respect and compassion are eternal.” — Barack Obama

I take that back. I'm going to accuse Jun of being LAMB OF OUR LORD.

It ain't me! LOL!

I do, however, agree with what pb says.

"What atheists can't do is dismiss the mention of miracles as common events in the early Christian community"---pb

You’re absolutely right. pb! thumbs up Most scholars agree, and recent studies have shown that things are rarely mentioned unless, at least in the mentioner’s mind, there is a real reason for mentioning them. Non-believers, and unbelievers alike, fail to understand how important it is to understand the reality of this, and even more importantly, if stuff can be demonstrated to have been mentioned (as shown in your examples above), that kind of stuff, most likely, really was mentioned!

The failure to understand the 'reality of mentioning' is the unbeliever’s downfall. The 'FACT' that stuff has been mentioned cannot be dismissed! smileys with beer

PiTT is Hank.

This is an old theme of his.

He is belief in science as the arbiter of all natural and supernatural claims tipped his hand.

Welcome back, Hank. I, for one, have missed you. I knew you'd come back.

Barry,

You'd'a made one doozy of an ancient historian.

I regret not having had the opportunity to sit in a grad school seminar with the likes of you. It'd'a been a blast. You certainly represent a new paradigm.

Me too! Especially if a few non-believers or even unbelievers had snuck in!

We'd a shown 'em! thumbs up

For It Is Mentioned: "And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many."

(This is something Mat mentioned)

i explain the miracles of jesus and of his followers back then the same way I explain the mircales of jesus and his followers today and those of zeus and mohammed and krishna and allah and others and their followers.

give you two guesses how i explain them and the first gues doesnt count. still cant guess. heres another hint. the explanation is two words long and the first word is never. still no? very well. the other word is happened. those miracles never happened. they never happened a million years ago they never happened 2000 years ago they arent happening today and they wont happen tomorrow.

any questions about where i stand on the miracles issue? smiling smiley

this stuff this belief in miracles stuff is why i cannot help but feel sorry for those like palin and pb and jeurgen who are forced to believe in this kind of god. the desperation in their lives the fear in their hearts must be truly staggering if it makes them believe such simple minded tales. i wish i had the power to make them feel better about their lives - especially here at xmas time when we celebrate the anniversary of the birthday of the prince of peace. winking smiley

Don't matter what grad skool you're in. They're there in abundance--not least of all, in the one I attended.

Sox,

Doubtless this will go over your head but others'll get it:

"I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit." Rm 15:18-19a

"The things that mark an apostle—signs, wonders and miracles—were done among you with great perseverance." 2 Cor. 12:12

"Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? Gal. 3:5

Wade,

ff is of the opinion that everything in the NT can be explained by the fact that Paul experienced a bout of dehydration. If this is ff then he's stepped it up a notch.

How do you explain the 12 Labors of Hercules unless he was in fact the son of Zeus? Surely you're not accusing Euripides of exaggeration!
