Paranoia starts out as a "believe" and gradually become more and more real as it progresses.
The fear of ghosts too...the more you imagine it to be real, the "real-er" it becomes. I've personally experienced it before I stopped believing ghosts. Although, I still get creep-ed out when I'm walking alone in dark at night after watching the original Japanese version of Ju-on 2 XP.

Most top scientists are not Born-Again Christians; they are more like Unitarian-Universalists, that is, 'Secular Humanists.' The type of people most likely to be attracted to Born-Againism are professional atheletes and military types and their admirers-- hardly the people you'd turn to for a comprehensive view of the universe.

That's not the most courageous definition of belief, there, Wade. You are probably refusing to 'believe in' many things that actually are true. So that everything you believe in almost certainly is true but it is likely that there is some, perhaps much, that is true that you doubt. That's a good way to protect yourself but it is not at all adventurous.

Where are you getting your data, linc, or is this just what you believe?
And, I gotta say, my best friend growing up attended and graduated from MIT. Some of the nerds he went to MIT with were the most ridiculous people you can imagine, just like the social morons on, what's that CBS situation comedy, The Big Bang Theory?
That you, linc, would use people like that as some sort of standard of human wisdom amuses me more than anything I've read on this site in the nearly eight years I've been posting here.
And, what makes it even more amusing is that I know that you are perfectly serious!

"Among contemporary scientists—physicists and biologists—about 40% hold strong religious beliefs" That's less the general population. [en.wikipedia.org]

That these guys'd be your icons is, well, just amusing.

There aint nuthin as amusing as denial in others. And, when it takes a form as absurd as that which you and linc expressed...
linc, Curt, LINC! You're agreeing with L-I-N-C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And, when you hold up as examples science nerd, you're in the capital of ROTFLMBOland.
assuming ur post isnt pure ad hom pb what is the relevance of being a nerd to being correct? john nash is a certifiable shizophrenic. didnt stop him from winnig the nobel prize.
being popular does not translate into being intelligent. in some cases genius might be said to preclude having a normal social life let alone an active happy one.

indy,
Millions of people all across America (not me, I don't watch TV period) watch The Big Bang Theory every week to laugh AT nerds because they are peculiar little people who few people like and almost no one admires. You may hire one to get a virus out of your computer, but you wouldn't want to hang out with him.
That linc and Curt suggest that these people are to be admired and used as life models is too much for me to either believe or take seriously.

Pb,
First off, I've never seen the show; I've seen commercials for it, that's it. Second, what did I write that prompts you to think I admire or believes that these characters or people should be used as life models? Although, thank goodness there a few Steve Jobs and Bill Gates in the world.
Indy,
You make a good point. Some the people who are bona fide geniuses have real social handicaps including Aspergers Syndrome
"That linc and Curt suggest that these people are to be admired and used as life models is too much for me to either believe or take seriously."---pb
Wow, pb! If linc and Curt had ever suggested that "these [without naming them] people" be used as life models it would be a bit confusing to me too! But since, as far as I know, they haven't...I'm not really sure what your point is?
I'm not saying they (whoever you are talking about) "shouldn't be" used as life models, because I don't know anything about them, but I have read Curt and Linc's posts and I can't even find a single thing about "life models" etc. Can you fill me in?
Scientists and born-againers are two distinct pesonality types. Can you name one top physicist who is born-again? In biology there's that one genome researcher that conservatives were touting a while back as proof that born-againsm isn't only for the stupid, but he is notable mainly as an exception, while plenty of football players thank Jesus after every touchdown.
Brainy types aren't much attracted to that Ol' Time Religion. Jocks, G.I.s, politicians and Fox news dittoheads are. Pb only wishes he was a brainy type.
