Budget Puzzle: You Fix the Budget
May 29, 2012 09:34PM
[www.nytimes.com]

I fixed the budget without touching SS or Medicare.

There are some options that I would include however, that would increase our surplus. Like cutting military spending across the board and reducing the size of our standing army.

HHH, how popular are libraries over there? I mean with the Internet, do you find people still thronging the libraries? Here, I think the visitor are mostly senior academic types - the young uns go to the net.

Libraries here have become repositories for homeless people like HHH.

Well, technically, Cas, they have kept me from being homeless. And libraries are still used a lot although the purposes are more diverse. What we lend is multimedia in nature, not just books. And we do provide a place where the less financially well-off or home deprived can access the Internet, something more and more important as time goes on. Or if your printer goes out (seems like we get at least one person a day who says that and I work at a branch library). We also send faxes for a good price. Get a lot of folks (five to ten a day) who need to use that service. So the old technology hangs on.

You could even argue that libraries are critical in achieving a more equitable society, offering materials and technology not available to everybody. In fact, there a very few who could, for example, afford even a portion of our books, DVDs, CDs, Books-on-CD, etc.

A friend of mine used to use a library computer when he was homeless.

I'd be a little nervous in this political environment working for a taxpayer-funded employer that doesn't turn a profit.

Are you working for a public library or a private one?

The only private libraries I ever hear about are the presidential libraries that are created after they leave office.

People who love to read. Not from kindle, but by thumbing through pages and enjoying the smell as you turn the pages.

Peets, we have big state owned libraries. Apart form that, small libraries owned by individuals. Faxing and printing facilities over here are usually found in Internet cafes.

I did it too. I reduced SSI benefits for those with high incomes though. Got no problem with that one.

It's a public library, Kashmirmaddie. And, Indy, you'd be stunned how many folks need to use a fax machine mainly for sending resumes or insurance claim papers.

LOL HHH, calling me KashmirMaddie is something an Indian gal would take as a compliment. Kashmiri girls are known for their beauty!

If you're faxing your resume you're beyond desperate.

Indy - They're not sending their resumes out cold. Their potential employers request that they be faxed. A lot of employers, in fact, want application submitted over the computer, which is another service we provide.

you know that you all created a great depression, right?

tumbleweeds rolling down the streets sad smiley

the system is set up to amass debt (and/or currency devaluation)

without fundamental change there is no fix that doesn't crush society

Public libraries caused the Great Depression? I think a return to the drawing board is called for, Tx.

Wow thats easy!!! Thanks for the link Cascade! Its amazing how easy it is to not just reduce the debt, but for the government to be in the green. Clearly the politicians dont want it to be.

And that "puzzle" doesn't include things like reducing basic military spending, getting rid of the EPA and the TSA which have done more harm than good.

It doesn't allow for cutting tax incomes from states that simply get the tax money back but at a lower rate because of all the bureaucracy.

We could also set up a fraud and waste oversight committee that couldn't be touched by Congress or the White House but had subpena powers and total control within the judiciary... Let that dig into the Pentagon, the various "branches" and fuk everything up.

I bet they could find about a trillion dollars to cut within a few weeks.

Simple solutions for a budget surplus:
Eliminate the Department of Defense
Remove the SS tax cap on earnings
Rescind the Bush tax cuts for the rich and reinstate the Eisenhower tax rates on them.

All fixed.
