I understand the far right wing candidate, Marine Le Pen, is instructing her supporters to leave their ballots blank. The purpose of that escapes me.

The purpose is that she finds Sarcozy ( conservative) and unpalitable. Holland of course is Socialist and "beyond the pale" for a right winger like Le Pen who probably hope for a return of Marshall Pétain.
Perhaps Holland can halt the drift to economic facism represented by the austerity measures
