Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) has appealed to the Islamist-dominated parliament not to approve two controversial laws on the minimum age of marriage and allowing a husband to have sex with his dead wife within six hours of her death according to a report in an Egyptian newspaper.
The appeal came in a message sent by Dr. Mervat al-Talawi, head of the NCW, to the Egyptian People’s Assembly Speaker, Dr. Saad al-Katatni, addressing the woes of Egyptian women, especially after the popular uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
She was referring to two laws: one that would legalize the marriage of girls starting from the age of 14 and the other that permits a husband to have sex with his dead wife within the six hours following her death*. [english.alarabiya.net]
* I am guessing that they'll compromise at three hours after death.

Maddy, please post verses from the Quran which says you CANNOT have sex with a dead woman. Religious texts tend to be "Thou Shall Not" lists.
Yeah ooh oh one thing I miss is cold Ethyl and her skeleton kiss
We met last night making love by the refrigerator light
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
Ah one thing no lie Ethyl's frigid as an Eskimo pie
She's cool in bed she's gotta be 'cause Ethyl's dead
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
Come on cold Ethyl freeze me baby that's cool that's nice
One thing it's true cold Ethyl I am stuck on you
And everything is my way ethyl don't have much to say
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
Come here cold Ethyl what makes you so cold ooh so cold ooh ooh
It gives this Foreigner song new meaning, doesn't it?
You're as cold as ice
You're willing to sacrifice our love
You want paradise
But someday you'll pay the price, I know
I've seen it before
It happens all the time
Closing the door
You leave the world behind
You're digging for gold
Yet throwing away
A fortune in feelings
But someday you'll pay
(Cold, as, ice)
You know that you are
(Cold, cold) (as, as) (ice)
As cold as ice to me
(Cold, cold, cold) (as, as, as) (ice)
(Ooh, ooh, ooh, you're as cold as ice)
(You're as cold as icccce)
You're as cold as ice
(Cold as icccce)
Cold as ice I know
(You're as cold as icccce)
You're as cold as ice
(Cold as icccce)
Cold as ice I know
(You're as cold as icccce)
Oh, yes I know
(Cold as icccce)
(You're as cold as icccce)
You're as cold as ice
(Cold as icccce)
Cold as ice I know
(You're as cold as icccce)
Oh, yes I know

Classic Alice Cooper from his best album - Welcome to My Nightmare. When the album came out, Alice did a television show with theatrical versions of all the songs. This was on ABC - back before cable or anything else - regular broadcast television. I'm sure the censors must have had no idea what the song was about or surely they would have cut it...
I'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I'd rather be dead than wet my bed
I'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I said dead than wet my bed
Oh, i'd rather be gone--than carry on
I'd rather go away--than feel this way
Oh, i'd rather be there--where you haven't got a care
And you're better off dead--though it doesn't seem fair
Oh, i'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I'd rather be dead than wet than wet my bed
I'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I'd rather be dead than wet than wet my bed
(ladies)
I'd rather keep my health--and dress myself
But you're better off dead than sitting on a shelf
(men)
I'll tie my tie 'till the day i die
But if i have to be fed then i'd rather be dead
And when he takes my hand on the very last day
I will understand because it's better that way
Oh! it's nice to be alive--when the dream comes true
You'll be better off dead--it could happen to you
Oh! i'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I'd rather be dead than wet my bed
I'd rather be dead--i'd rather be dead
I'd rather be dead than wet than wet my bed
---Harry Nilsson
If you don't know Nilsson, he's kind of an oddball musician who would fit in just as easily with the Beatles as Monty Python. Here's a great video of him recording this song (I just discovered it, btw - my first viewing).
Cascade,
Thanks for setting the record straight. But in the article that debunked the story (which spread across the Internet like wildfire) starts out thus:
Quote
Today, Egypt's state-owned Al Ahram newspaper published an opinion piece by Amr Abdul Samea, a past stalwart supporter of the deposed Hosni Mubarak, that contained a bombshell: Egypt's parliament is considering passing a law that would allow husbands to have sex with their wives after death.
It's pretty amazing to me that any newspaper (muchless a state-owned) would take the idea seriously enough to publish it as a legitimate opinion piece.
Well, it was an opinion piece by a staunch supporter of the previous regieme and I would suspect that many on the paper's staff and admin are supporters as well so it's not surprising that they would publish something that casts the new government in a poor light. Egypt is still going through a transition and many are vying for power or working against the military rule now in power.
