Government shut down the worst thing that could happen for Republicans

Government shut down the worst thing that could happen for Republicans
March 16, 2011 12:15AM
Rep. Mike Pence last week said, “I would rather shut the government down for a few days than shut the future down for my children and our grandchildren,” More.....

I heard something similar last October from someone in the TEA Party. I told this person that Republicans were going to have to work with Democrats and President Obama because they will only control the House, Democrats will still control the Senate (because of the TEA Party) and Obama will still be President. I told her if Republicans failed to compromise with Democrats the government may shut down, this person responded saying she would rather the government shut down for the next two years than continue to do further damage. I have serious problems with this mentality some Conservatives have that a government shut down is the best case scenario.

For starters why would anyone want the government to shut down? PBS has a nice article that outlines what happened during the 95-96 shut downs. CNN Money also suggests that all essential services will remain open, albeit with less employees.

The political costs of a shut down are probably the most important thing to Republicans, because I am going to guess that they frankly don't care about anything else. So what happened after the 95-96 shut downs? Bill Clinton cruised to victory in the 96 elections. In 94 Clinton was though to be done, no one after the 94 elections thought he was going to be reelected and then the GOP handed him victory on a silver platter. They failed to compromise with him and the government shut down and even though this didn't really affect people too much it was the stigma of a government shut down that doomed the GOP in 96. So I have to ask, why would any Republican want a shut down? As far as I am concerned a shut down should not even be on the table and should be avoided at all costs. A government shut down will play right into Obama and the Democrats hands and it is going to be tough enough to defeat Obama with the current slate of candidates, we don't need to make it any harder on ourselves.

It's interesting that Gingrich hasn't been vocal on this. The man had to sacrifice his political career because of the shutdown. Maybe he's hoping to wipe out some of his competition by allowing them to go forward with this? Hmmm...
The Quinnipiac University survey of nearly 2,000 registered voters found 46 percent said a government shutdown would be a good thing versus 44 percent who said that it would be bad.

The was within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points

Imam,
46% is less than half. Furthermore, the idea of a government shutdown only sounds good until people realize what government services they are missing.

Yeah ole math genius but it's more than 44% the socialist democrats are going to lose big in 2012.
Last time the RUbs thought it was a good idea to try to shut down government they fell HARD.

Now, how is that going to happen with conservatives calling for a shutdown if they don't get their way?

Your logic is off, 12th. I think you are overestimating the support Conservatives will receive if the government shuts down. As Curt said, it sounds good on paper but when it happens it is not a good thing. Furthermore your poll shows that the country is pretty evenly divided on the issue. The poll also fails to mention those who strongly support a government shut down and those who lean towards it. That is a major distinction, because the leaner’s can shift their opinion rapidly if they realize a government shutdown is not a good thing and it will backfire. I would not advise shutting the government down based on that poll, there is not overwhelming support, it could very easily backfire and historically it has backfired on the party responsible. The best thing for the GOP to do right now is to compromise. I know that is hard for those who are beholden only to their ideology but at the end of the day it is best for America and that is why we pay our Representatives and Senators, to do what is best for us, not what is best for their party or ideology.

I just want you to know, F, that when the day comes that the GOP chases you out of their midst with pitchforks and torches, liberals and progressives will be there to welcome you with open arms.

You know... there are these things called "blue dogs"...

F-Y at least favors something that might actually lead somewhere. Letting the government shut down has no real future other than as a temporary political ploy (a cynical one indeed and for which, some folks will fall).

12th Imam/Cessna here is the personification of that old adage - "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it."

The shutdown wouldn't affect me (directly) so I'm kind of hoping it happens. Wisconsin was a big wake-up call. I'd love to see the GOP compound that national error by reinforcing people's opinions of them with a shutdown.

I believe that the GOPs'll win the government shut down war.

They are already telling the story that makes this the Dems fault. They are planning to shut the government down and blame Nancy Pelosi, who took a huuuuuuuge beating in the last election.

I hear GOPs say every day that the Dems should have passed a budget last October but they didn't for political reasons. GOPs are going to say that as long as they need to to convince the people who will vote in 012 and then they will shut the government down and gain political capital.

As much as you libs don't want to see it, Boehner is one crafty SOB. He's going to wipe the floor with Nancy Pelosi before this is all over.
"You far left socialist do not realizte that this country is center right the independent voter are center right "

I THINK Imom is trying to say that the country is Center Right on average. If so then explain why 2/3rds of the country i opposed to the Afghanistan War?

And of course the political whores are starting to line up to show their lack of support.

Rub Haley Barbour shifts position, taking in the political wind, in light of the new poll that shows that 2/3rds of Americans oppose the Afghanistan War.

*******************
"What is our mission?" Barbour said. "How many Al Qaeda are in Afghanistan. ... Is that a 100,000-man Army mission?"

"I don't think our mission should be to think we're going to make Afghanistan an Ireland or an Italy" or a Western-style democracy, he said.

And IF most of the country is Center RIght, and by inference Right as well, then Obama's numbers should be through the roof.

Obama is totally Center Right.

The party that is less willing to compromise will be the one blamed for a government shutdown. Now, just which party is that? What do all the news reports indicate? What party contains folks who thinks a government shutdown would be a good thing in itself? Let's just say Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are not members.

Conserative talk show hosts and Tea Party types clearly want the Republicans to force the government to shut down thinking the public will blame the Democrats when the Dems don't cave all the way. Does that really make any sense?

This has to be the post of the month. Boner's name describes him perfectly. 5 months into his term after a huge inexplicable gift called the "Tea Baggers" falls into the GOP's lap and the Rs have lost all direction and are totally floundering about like fish on the dock.

Reminds me of the Ds after Obama's election.
