Say you steal a car from somebody's driveway. Is it a viable defense to insist that it's really your car? Can you discount the fact that the title to the car is in somebody else's name? Can you produce an "alternate title" to the car and claim ownership? Can you take the case to 60 different courts arguing that it's your car and despite 60 losses still say you sincerely believe it's your car? What if you are told by friends and co-workers repeatedly it's not your car? What if you find a lawyer you dredges up an arcane and archaic law which could be interpreted to put the car's ownership in doubt?
If a thief insists continuously and steadfastly that they really, really believe the stolen car is theirs do they get off scot free?
